Teaching efl in a kindergarten is probably one of the most rewarding and frustrating things that a person can do. If you want to do it well, you have to really love doing it and you will find out very quickly if you do! Whilst it may look easy since the kindergartens normally provide all the basic materials needed, to do it well is much more difficult. A lot of this is down to the mentality of the companies running these kindergartens. They are there purely to make money and a lot of the time the students progress, or lack of, is hidden or ignored as long as the parents keep paying. This can be a cause of a lot of frustration to you as a teacher. In these scenarios it is very important that you do not try to fight against the kindergarten as you will lose. Instead it is much more beneficial to work with the kindergarten if you can or just concentrate on providing the best education for your classes. No kindergarten will ever have a problem with you providing extra materials or taking your time and using it to help your students. Many of the techniques and teaching styles you will have learnt from your tefl course will be at complete loggerheads with what your kindergarten expects or insists upon. Many of the kindergartens are built around the repeat after me and the throw a sticky ball teaching method; since it is easy to implement and can have fast results for simple vocabulary. However they will still use this method for grammar as the students become older and major problems can ensue. When planning your lessons in a kindergarten you are always on a very strict timetable. Fortunately the material that they normally expect you to cover each week is usually very simple, for example, it will consist of 'What do you like?', 'I like ____.', 'I don't like ____.' and about 6 food items. As you can see, you have an enormous opportunity to expand on this. You can increase the amount of foods you teach, you can add reasons as to why they like/don't like certain foods, you can bring in food items and have them taste them, you can add whether something is bitter/sweet/spicy/cold, etc. In addition to the problems relating to teaching methods you are very likely to run into issues relating to the behaviour of the students. Although the majority of students will be no problem, there will always be one or two that may give issues. In my experience it is best to be as tolerant as possible with these students and try to provide as much incentive for them to behave as possible. My method of providing an incentive is the allocation of stamps or stickers in their textbook. By giving stamps/stickers you are encouraging good behaviour. Once the students reach a certain number of stamps/stickers they can be awarded a small gift, such as a pencil, eraser, stamp, etc. Punishing the students is almost always counterproductive as there is nothing you can really punish them with, without causing issues with either the kindergarten or their parents. Excluding the students from the activities/games is completely off limits, as you are damaging their learning. Therefore by sticking with the pure reward system for good behaviour you are reinforcing that if you are good you get 'something' and all children love gifts! In extreme cases, where the behaviour is completely unacceptable, it is always advisable to ask the homeroom teacher to assist you. She is always in a much better position than you to deal with errant behaviour. To sum up there are massive personal rewards that come from teaching in a kindergarten. The moment when a grammar lesson 'clicks' with a class, the excitement when the students see you outside of class and if you are lucky enough to teach students all the way from age 6 to 12, the personal satisfaction in knowing that you oversaw their learning from no english ability at all, to talking about their favourite video games. However it is not always easy, but then again nothing worthwhile ever is!!
