What activities can be used for teaching English online? Unit 17 provides a wealth of different online learning resources that can be used to teach English as a foreign language. It covers seven different categories of provided websites to be used as teaching resources. They are dictionaries, learning, literature and poetry, media, resources, teaching, and a miscellaneous section. Online dictionaries provides as it says online resources for dictionaries, as well as grammar, references, thesauri, and etymologies. Cambridge International Dictionaries Online (http://dictionary.cambridge.org/) provides useful information of "English, American English, Phrasal Verbs, and Idioms". Roget's Thesaurus (http://humanities.uchicago.edu/forms_unrest/ROGET.html) provides and online searchable engine for this well respected English thesaurus. Unit 17 recommends World Wide Words: exploring the English Language (www.worldwideworlds.org) because it is interesting and easy to browse/. It contains an English word's origin and common phrases. The learning sections provides online lessons, as well as exercises, and various learning materials. By far English@WSL (http://english.wsl.edu.pl/) seems the most appropriate for usable exercises in the classroom. Accents in English with eViews (www.eviews.net) could be useful for teaching online students because it uses weekly comprehension exercises based off of downloadable interviews in different accents to accustom students to different accents of the English language. When students want to become interactive online, Dave's ESL Cafe (www.eslcafe.com) provides an online forum for teachers and students with chat rooms to connect other students of English as a Second Language (ESL). Personal for me the literature and poetry at the most useful, it provides a link to the website called The On-Line Books Page (http://digitaLibrary.upenn.edu/books/). It is a database of over 12,000 online books, noted as the vast majority of the English language. It also includes links to libraries of non English texts which would probably not be appropriate for teaching English as a Second Language (TEFL). The media section provides links to English newspapers, TV and radio stations, and online journals or blogs. Probably the most famous is the BBC channel (www.bbc.co.uk) and its extensions BBC English Radio (www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/learningenglish) and BBW World Service (www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice). Another well known media resource for teachers is CNN (www.cnn.com) it is a US new resource which broadcasts in both Spanish and English. The resources sections is useful for anyone interested in the TEFL subject. Sites such as Business English Special Interest Group (www.besig.org) os useful for teachers or students either studying or teaching a specialized TEFL course for business goal orientation. A broad database is provided by TESL/TEFL/TESOL/ESL/EFL/ESOL Links at http:/q/iteslj.org/ESL3.html. The teaching section is an extremely useful section for teachers of TEFL because such sites as 5000 SAT preparation words (http://freevocabulary.com) provides students with over 5000 English words used in the SATs along with brief descriptions as well as Boggle's World: ESL activities for adults (http://bogglesworldesl.com/) provides teachers with free teaching materials for adults that can be used for the study phase of teaching activities. The miscellaneous section of Unit 17 provides teachers with the site, Foreignborn (http://foreginborn.com) a site dedicated to practical information for emigrating students wishing to study English in the US.
