The Vietnamese language is fairly simple grammatically, with every vocabularies are comprised from single syllable words. For example, the phrase in English “good morning class, how’s everyone doing” translated into Vietnamese would be “chào buổi sáng cả lớp, mọi người có khỏe không”. There are no vocabulary in the Vietnamese language that has more than one syllables together, therefore a Vietnamese student most likely speak with a single syllables accent or as many would say, choppy. Regarding the pronunciation of the language, there are 6 different tones in each single syllable. A Vietnamese sentence is very tonal, since many words with different tones are put together which form a phrase. Many have compared heating native ps in Vietnamese talk with each other as a very choppy song because of how tonal it seems. In order for a Vietnamese Student learning English, pronunciation is usually the biggest struggle. Since in the Vietnamese language each syllable is stressed with the beginning consonant and there’s no ending sound to the word. Therefore pronunciation for words as simple as “stop” can be difficult for learners at a beginning level. Because the word “Stop” is made of 2 consonants, s and t combine, a Vietnamese student usually struggle to combine two sounds to correctly pronounce “stop”. The effort may result in splitting the word into two syllables, first “ss” then “top”. This is a very common results for untrained students for them to chop up a multi-syllables English word up into single syllable words and pronounce and enunciate each single sound. The more complex a vocabulary is especially the more syllables there exist in a single word, the harder it is to pronounced, from a learner’s perspective. Take the word “organization” for example. There are 5 syllables in that word, broken apart it will look like this: Or- ga - nai - záy - shun. The student will have to go through the process of learning how to pronounce each syllables correctly thus presenting a challenge of remembering all the pronunciation of each syllables then finally combine it all together to pronounce the word “organization” correctly. A familiar and useful teaching method for Vietnamese students would be drilling exercises which include constant repetition of the focused vocabulary or phrases. Since the muscle around the mouth and vocal area can be trained to accustomed to different speeches and accents, nothing is sort of impossible to help a Vietnamese student achieve a good English accent. Another reason why drilling exercises are necessary for achieving success in pronunciation is that it certainly help boost memorizing ability. A more common perhaps easier method to approach this challenge for students would be watching English language videos such as YouTube videos or popular English movies. Not only is it fun and enjoyable since it’s entertainment, but the brain is able to learn while watching too. Since the students are exposed to the language spoken during the movie, they’re able to pick up words and phrases and are able to learn the pronunciation. This is highly encouraged for young leaner since they would be able to pick up the language through this method very quickly.
