There are many factors that can affect the quality of a class or a teaching session. Some are controllable factors, like how well the teacher prepared, how interactive the class is, how familiar the teacher is with the subject, etc. There are also many uncontrollable factors such as how motivated the students are, readiness of the students, quality of the learning environment, etc. There is not a single definitive formula for a high quality class, but there is one thing that can always help. That is the the instructor’s teaching skills. As a part time teacher and tutor, I have taught big classes, small classes and 1 on 1 classes. I have had adult students with advanced degrees and kids with little math and English knowledge. I noticed that regardless ages, genders or nationalities, people have similar learning behaviors. Some are active learners, some are passive learners, and some are impulsive learners. It is imperative that different approaches should be used when dealing with different learners. Being able to identify the student(s) learning type(s) is an important part of the teaching skills. There is a famous saying in Chinese “Use the right medicine for the symptom”, meaning only the right solution can cure the problem properly. In teaching we need to apply the right methods to the right type of students. If not, active students can be frustrated and become inactive; Passive students can give up; Impulsive students can become inactive. The goal of a good teacher is to uncover the full learning potentials of each student, motivate their learning desires, encourage consistent learning behaviors. In order to achieve the above goals, as teachers we need to sharpen our teaching skills. In addition to the obvious teaching methods, there are also many other skills that are part of the teaching skills, such as ability to use different teaching tools/facilities, ability to communicate with students, ability to discover their needs, strength and weakness, ability to monitor students’ progresses, and ability to identify any obstacle that students face and help them to overcome the issue. With the proper help and guidance almost all of the students can get what they want to learn. We all have been a student at some time in our lives. When I was a student at school, I felt the difference it made when the teacher knew how to to teach. Some teachers were excellent scholars, but they couldn’t teach well. They spent whole lecture periods explaining and deriving long dry theories without giving any examples. Some teachers didn’t give reviews at start of the classes which met only once a week. Some teachers kept talking through the entire class time without asking questions or seeking students’ feedback. Those were boring and not very productive lessons. On the other hand, there were teachers who gave ample examples in supplement to theory explanations, who engaged students throughout the class, who stayed after the class to interact with students for feedbacks. The learning experience are very different, and the outcome are different as well. In school students always talk about good teachers and bad teachers. Besides the teachers’ personalities, most of those comments are based on the teachers’ teaching abilities and teaching skills. In sum, to become a good teacher, possessing good teaching skills is essential. This becomes even more important when teaching a foreign language. There are constraints and challenges in communications, and good teaching skills will be very helpful.
