I Introduction This summative task will discuss how to teach the productive and receptive skills that provide the information and practice necessary for students to become competent in all forms of English communication. Different methods will be examined for each of the 3 general levels of instruction. A) Basic The following techniques teach the basic words needed to create and understand simple sentences: 1) Flash cards. ( listening, speaking ) The teacher shows individual cards to the class and pronounces the word that is represent on the front ( the English word is printed on the back). Then the students repeat the sounds they hear. After that, the class is separated into pairs. Each group is given a set of the cards. One person shows the cards to his or her partner . The other pupil says a sentence that uses that word i.e - The house is blue. 2 ) Pictures on worksheets ( writing , reading, speaking) After the first exercise, the instructor hands out worksheets with the same pictures that are on the flash card. Beside each illustration are two blanks to fill in. The students fill the name of the word ( book ). Then they write a sentence using that word such as “The book is on the table.” Then the pupils read their sentences to the class. B ) Intermediate The following techniques are designed to develop the students’ grammar skills: 1) Tense practice . ( reading , writing, speaking) Work sheets that contain short stories with blanks are given to the students. They fill in the blanks with the proper verb form and then answer the questions. Text : Mary _____ ( be ) sick yesterday and could not go to work. She _______ ( sleep) all day. Questions 1 Why didn’t Mary go to work yesterday? _________________________ Question 2 What did she do all day? _________________________ After finishing, the teacher asks individuals to read a question and the answer. 2 ) Spoken personal statements ( speaking, listening, writing) The teacher asks the class members to write 7 questions about themselves. After they are finished, each student sits in front of the room. This person reads a statement such as, “I was born in Paris.” At the same time, the people in the class write notes of what is being said. Later the same person asks the class members questions . For example, “ Where was I born?” The reply would be , “You were born in Paris.” 3 ) Role play. ( writing, speaking, reading, listening) After studying the vocabulary for a specific situation i.e. buying new clothes, the students are separated into pairs. Their assignment is to write a dialog with the words just learned. Then the two act out the story in front of the class. Then one of the two would ask questions to the class such as “How much did the pants cost?” and “What color were they?” C ) Advanced The following techniques are designed to develop the students conversational skills : 1 ) video viewing ( listening, reading, writing, speaking ) The pupils view a short video about everyday situations. After writing down what happened, they read their essay to the class. Then the teacher hands out a questionnaire about the video. After filling it out, the students read their answers to the class. 2 ) creative writing ( writing, speaking) The instructor writes various topics on the board and asks the students to write their opinions on one of them. Examples: Why it important to be able to speak English well. Why people like or do not like to travel. After finishing, they read their essays to the class. Then the teacher leads them in discussions on one of the topics . 2) Summary Effective teaching techniques must involve the members of the class intellectually and emotionally. Engaging the class members’ attention will stimulate their thinking and encourage them to express their ideas and feelings with the new words that are being learned. By participating in these activities, the students begin to communicate in English as naturally as they do in their first language.
