Language in communication is one phenomenon, or one of main semiotic signs as Ferdinand de Saussure claimed, that distinguishes us from animals. Although there are a number of theories about how and when it was originated, it is well known that there are approximately 6000 languages in the world nowadays. Among all of them, English is probably the most dominant language internationally in almost all aspects of our life, because of the pace of globalization. In order to understand how all this occurred that way, one should look back at its history and the way it developed. The English language has gone through some steps until this time to be a global language. It all started when German tribes moved to the current territory of the U.K. Through the influence of the spread of Christianity and Norman invasion, it underwent some changes. The language changed in pronunciation level, word level and even syntactic level. However, it was not the end of this journey. When Europe started its exploration around the world for different reasons, England was also a pioneer in most places. The war between France and England made its own contribution to this process. During early modern English period, individuals such Shakespeare did not stand aside in this caravan. Ronald Carter was right when he noted that the language of Shakespeare is the first and lasting affirmation of the great changes that took place in the sixteenth century. Colonization also played a big role in this process. Probably some believe that colonization in early modern English period caused the direction of the world history to tilt in a wrong way, however, from the English language perspective it had positive aspects. One of those is that, while colonizing other countries, it had a close contact with other languages such as Hindi, Persian, Arabic, Turkish, etc. as a result of which this external influence from outside pushed the English language up to one more level. We can meet hundreds, or maybe thousands of borrowed words from those languages used in English nowadays. With the introduction of technology in the 21st century, the pace of this process has increased and become more worldwide. It is the technology along with economy caused the language to build up its lead. While adopting technology, other countries had to accept English in most areas such as education, medicine, IT Technology, aviation, science, art, cinema etc. This is because all changes in those areas started in English speaking countries. Today, more than one billion people speak English as a first and a second language. According to the statistics on www.englishlanguageguide.com, English is the richest in vocabulary. 80% of the information stored in the world’s computers is in English. The largest broadcasting companies in the world such as CBS, NBC,ABC,BBC and CBC transmit in English. The top universities such as Cambridge, Oxford, Harvard etc. are in English speaking countries. Millions of people attempt to apply and win the Green Card Lottery to go to the U.S. Everywhere people are learning English and taking exams such as TOEFL, TEFL, CELTA, DELTA etc. Kyrgyzstan , one small country in Central Asia, is not an exception in that most countries accepted this language in a variety of areas. Despite the fact that Kyrgyzstan has been under the power of Russian language, according to the recent study conducted by a local professor Alimzhan Zakirov, the English language has become the second most studied language in the country after the native language during the last decade. There are discussions about the future of English. People from different parts of society are pondering about it on their own way. Will it remain as a global language in the future? Some people argue that because of political and financial issues, some other languages may take its place. Some others, including me, believe that for sure it will have a dramatic change as language is not static, but dynamic. Perhaps in 100 years from now the English language that we know now may have a different form. However, because of its features that are easy to learn, the English language will remain as a global language. Furthermore, there is a lot of stimulus in different ways. It is also so worldwide that it is impossible to lose its position.
