English has become a global language. As of 2015 over 350 million people spoke English as a first language and over 430 million spoke it as a second language. Most technical terminology is also in English. These factors alone make the desire to speak English more profound. English has become an educational preference. Globalization is a big part of our world today. Our world is shrinking and we are now dealing with countries face-to-face unlike ever before. The power often stems from the most predominantly English speaking countries. These countries have strong military force and a powerful persona. Back in the old days only people from Great Britain spoke English. Back then, the British were known for their strength. The top five most spoken languages in the world are Chinese, Spanish, English, Hindi, and English. Although English ranks as third on this list it is still known as a universal language. English is the preferred language at the United Nations and is especially used in diplomatic exchanges between leaders from other countries. There are several other things that make English a global language. Speaking English is like a status symbol. It is chic and cool and everyone wants to speak it. The Internet is also heavily based in English. You can find that out easily when you try to Google something. A little known fact is that it is mandatory to speak English if you are in the aviation industry. If you are a pilot or crew from any country you must speak English before you can be employed by the aviation company or airline. English is a global language because it is often associated with intelligence. We often think of Yale or Harvard as setting the bar for the most intelligent people in the world. These are schools based in an English speaking country. If you consider education, music, the Internet, technology and medicine you will see that they all are strong in having English utilized. Being a global language means it is not only accepted in other countries but rather it is encourage in non-English speaking countries. After the United States, India has the highest number of English speaking people in the world. English is no doubt a universal language. It is the world’s second largest native language an English-speaking countries are responsible for about 40% of the world’s total GNP. You can step foot into almost any country in this world and someone will speak some English, know some words or phrases, or will be striving to learn to speak English as a second language.
