One student to one teacher is considered one to one teaching. Teaching one to one can have many advantages for the student and teacher. It can also have disadvantages too. A main advantage of teaching one to one is that the student does not need to share time with others. This allows the student to participate in all areas of the activity. The student has the teachers undivided attention. The student can be heard as well. There is flexibility and it allows the student to choose the pace of the lesson. It will often give the student an equal role in the classroom and move away from teacher centered lesson. More advantages with one to one teaching are the teacher will have the opportunity to review with the student, give feedback and correct and errors throughout the lesson. The student does not have to feel intimidated by other students, and it can also help gain confidence when face with other students. There is no reason for classroom management when teaching a one to one student. As it is easier to set up one student for success, then it is to manage a whole class. The class is also not disrupted by others who are being disrespectful, or come in late, or leave early. The teacher also only needs to create a lesson plan for an individual student rather than a class with mixed abilities. There are disadvantage too when teaching one to one. As there is only one student, the activities need to be slowed down, but at the same time it is easy to go through the lesson to fast since there is only one student to play the activities. When planning the lesson for one student, the teacher will have to come up with different ways to extend the activity without boring the student. Resources, class discussions, and support are not available to the student or teacher which can be a disadvantage. Learning from one another, listening to other opinions and ideas can help us keep engaged and motivated. But without a class to listen to, our resources are limited. Sometimes pressure on the student and teacher can be more overwhelming. The student in a one to one classroom environment does not allow for a break time to just listen to others or have a calm down period between turns in games and activities. It does not allow time to study the material or observe from others. Making mistakes in front of a teacher alone can be more anxious on the student then if they were in a group setting. One to one teaching may create conflict between the teacher and student. The dynamic or relationship may not work, and it can make the class a difficult time for both people. It is very important to be able to create a respectful relationship to have a successful class. With a group setting, the relationship between student and teacher is more mutual as it does not feel so personal. As I have taught both, individual student and a whole class I do feel that there are advantages and disadvantages to both on a personal level. I like the dynamic of a classroom with multiple students, but it is hard to have the students all focused at once, and I end up teaching activities with one student at a time.
