A global language is a language which is learned and spoken internationally, and is characterized not only by the number of its native and second language speakers, but also by its geographical distribution, and its use in international organizations and in diplomatic relations. The influence of any language is a combination of three main things: The number of countries using it as their first language or mother-tongue, the number of countries adopting it as their official language and the number of countries teaching it as their foreign language of choice in schools. English language is a combination of these three main things which enable it to establish as global language. It is the most common spoken language in the world. Research from all over the world shows the cross border business communication is most often conducted in English. A vast percentage of the world’s website, software and operating system are built in language developed from English. Therefore, if we are conducting business online and dealing with people outside of our country, English will help us to the maximum level. English is the language of the media industry. If we speak English, we won’t need to rely on translations and subtitles anymore to enjoy our favorite books, songs, films and TV shows. Hollywood, no doubt, is the powerhouse of global entertainment, so it is natural that English would become the main language for movie – making. It is true that the movies are often dubbed over or subtitled – but they are really best enjoyed in the language in which they were produced. Most of the content produced on the internet is in English. So knowing English will allow us to access to an incredible amount of information which may not be otherwise available. One example of this is in respect of word order and the ability to phrase sentences as an active or passive ( e.g., He kicked the football, or the football was kicked by him). Another is in the ability to use the same word as both a noun and a verb ( such as drink, flight ). New words can easily be formed by the addition of prefixes or suffixes ( e.g. bright + ness = brightness ) , or by compounding or fusing existing words together ( e.g., air + port = airport, sea + shore = seashore). We can often find many different ways to explain the same thing as it has wide range of vocabulary). English has enabled a common communication means between people of different backgrounds. For example, a German may not need to learn Indian language in order to communicate with someone from India if both individuals speak English. Language and globalization effect each other. English has facilitated communication between Chinese people and the rest of the world and has proved to be important for international trade. If a student’s ambition lie in science or medicine, the student cannot neglect English either. Much of the technical terminology is based on English words and if he wants to learn about the latest developments and discoveries, he has to read them in journals and research reports published in English, no matter whether the scientists who wrote them are from non-English speaking countries.
