I've been teaching kids English about one year working for a small language center. The whole experience is good, i like the feeling with teaching kids English. However, I am discontent with my teaching skills which is still immature, my lesson plans are not good enough, even the teaching resources is limited. And recently, I asked advise from my co-worker about his teaching experience and the way to improve my ability. And he recommended ITTT ( ITTT shows clear instruction for me to learn. Here, the best thing I’ve learned from TEFL course is the whole concept of teaching! It provides 120 hours TEFL certificate course which includes 20 units cover every part of teaching. The most helpful parts for me are as follows: Unit5 Managing Classes, Unit9 Lesson Planning. To get the lesson go through fluently, teacher has to know how to manage the class. Most of the time, I just focused on finish the lesson. Following the lesson progress and lesson plan was first! After had learnt Unit 5, I changed my focus. Lesson progress and plan still important, but if I focus the class rules and make a rapport with kids, it is very helpful to my class. Now, I focus on eyes contact, gesture and voice. I was very nervous before when students are in chaos. I had to speak very aloud to make them calm down. The feeling is terrible. But with right eyes contact, (funny )gesture, and the changed voice, classroom management is controllable. And grouping students for different activities to make sure it go well. Groups stimulate students to join in the game with more passion. Sometimes I gave individual attention to someone to encourage this kid or to make sure that kid can behave well. The other one is about lesson planning. I had a vague impression about the lesson plan before. I was focused on what I should teach that day. Now I know the lesson plan can be so clear and helpful to teacher. With the focus on five aspects: learner objectives, personal aims, anticipated problems for students&solutions;, and anticipated problems for teacher&solutions;. Of course, the ESA methods! I am trying to correct every lesson plan with detail information like the course taught. I was used to set learner objectives, and never thought personal aims is important which limited my grow of teaching. And for ESA procedures, it was a mess sometimes. Now I’m still trying to make it formally. Especially with the clear definition of EP and ESA, I can set the time for every procedure, which produced a very nice class. Later, when I am mature with the straight arrow ESA, I will try to use Boomerang ESA and Patchwork ESA. And meanwhile, I still need to pay attention to the flexibility, goals, revision, variety and balance. It’s still take time. Also, I need to review the course again and again. All in all, the whole TEFL course is very practical and covers every part about teaching and being a good teacher. The teaching idea and games are rich. The resources it provides are plenty. And tutor is very nice! Thank you!
