Teachers play important roles in the lives of the students in their classrooms. Teachers are best known for their role of educating the students. The best teachers possess excellent communication skills, understand classroom management and appropriate discipline techniques to ensure a positive learning environment. Teachers do not need to be experts in any specific business field to be able to teach business English but rather can give the students skills to use their knowledge through the medium of the English language. Teaching business English has its clear advantages and disadvantages over younger learners. Some advantages are the maturity level of the students are higher, the motivation levels are greater than adolescents, attention spans are greater than those of children, teachers and students can form bonds, most students will be on their own will, and adults see practice as a means to an end. Disadvantages include greater internal pressures of daily life, adult students are often more self-conscious about certain activities, have problems adjusting to student life as they have been out of the educational system for some time, students could be tired as they attend classes before or after work and finally if you are teaching within a business and certain issues come up in the company, they students might disappear. When teachers first meet their students before class an assessment test should be given to determine what the student knows and what they need to know. Next a need analysis should be presented. The needs analysis is to give the teacher an idea of the students’ previous learning experiences, what they use English in their job and what they feel would be the most beneficial areas for them to study. Once all this is in place the teacher’s first lesson might have some time devoted to a needs negotiation so the teacher will be able to focus on the areas the students feel would be most useful to them as a group. There are different theories to syllabus design that can be used as a tool to give a focus to the class lessons. The structural syllabus is based on sequencing by grammar complexity, the functional/notional syllabus is based around communicative purposes, the learner-fed syllabus is one that have students’ input in the making, and the situational syllabus is based on situational needs rather than grammar. In lesson planning for a business English classroom, the teacher needs to have a lesson plan that is relevant and interesting for the students, using business terminology students are familiar with and can use in business settings. The ESA method should be used to devise the lesson plan. The teacher should start with the engage stage to get the students attention and get them to start speaking English. When coming up with vocabulary words for study to teach the class, the teacher can use words commonly used in the business setting such as growth, revenue, target, turnover, forecast, restructuring and others. There can be several different study and activate stages as to broaden students’ knowledge of the English language, grow student interactions and increase student talk time.
