The contents of this unit include the methods of teaching a foreign language, the ESA (Engage, Study, Activate) method in depth, the best way to use each part of the ESA Method, how to give feedback, and how to give correction to students. I've learned that that there are many different methods to teaching a foreign language. Some methods are harder to use and have vastly gone out of style such as the Audio-Lingualism method due to large use of repetitive drills. I have also learned in depth the parts of the ESA Method which is being used widely now in ESL schools. The ESA method has three parts. Engage, Study and Activate. The engage part of the method is to get students involved in the lesson by using things such as games, music, and pictures. This will peak their interest in the lesson. The next step is study. This step usually involves some sort of worksheet or activity to review and go over what was learned in the lesson that day. Things like word searches, tongue twisters, or even gap filling sheets can be used to help students study the lesson content for the day. The last part of the method is activate. This stage gets students to use their new language with each other engaging them in conversations or having them think of words and ways to use the language with the class or with a group. Things like role-plays, communication games, and debates help students experiment with the language as they are learning. While students are in the activate stage I as the teacher should be observing so that I can give proper feedback to the students on what they are doing correctly as well as what they can improve on. While giving feedback I as the teacher will need to make sure to be careful how I give feedback to students. Making sure that there is a positive note to the feedback will encourage students to continue to practice the language with each other. The last part of this unit goes over correction. It points out that correction from the teacher should be the last resort as the students should be looking for their mistakes and each others mistakes to help correct themselves and each other.
