With the rapid increasing demand of study and business internationally, and the fast developing of Internet Technology globally, learning English online is becoming more and more an effectively and convenient way. This trend has affecting many learners, especially among adult English learners. This article is to discuss this raising demanding tool in teaching English to adult learners and, also state some advices based on my perspective and experience. First thing first, the internet technology needed in the course of learning. Below are some details. 1. Both teachers and students need to equipped with well-function learning equipment such as computer, pad, or a smartphone. Students need to watch the teaching materials and teacher’s facial expressions, gestures, body languages and even the teacher’s mouth while teaching pronunciation, on the screen. So that the screen has better to be in high resolution. Teachers are suggested to use computer with camera, headset, etc. 2. Reliable internet connection. Make sure both teacher and students have stable and strong connection with the internet. It is better to have the wire connection, or at least stable wireless connection at home. 3. Electronic course materials apart from the course book. PPT preferred, with listening sound track and videos if necessary. This should be shown in both the teacher and student’s electronic devices simultaneously. 4. Class level and size. Find out student’s level and put them into an as suitable as possible level of class. Suggest to have class maximum of 12 students or smaller group like 4 students. One on one teaching is also becoming popular to meet the most individual demand in English learning. Second, follow the ESL teaching methods. 1. A typical straight arrow structured ESA lesson is recommended for the teaching, especially to a lower level of class. As teaching via internet is not the same as teaching in a real group in a traditional classroom, some physical teaching activities is not feasible in the online class. So that the teaching structure or activities have to keep in simple. 2. In pronunciation classes. Teachers make sure to pronounce the sound clearly, slowly and loudly. Teachers are also encouraged to show your mouth to the camera and explain how to pronounce to the students, so that students can copy the way and produce the correct sound. Also, sentences and tongue twisters are suggested to add into the teaching materials, to practice the intonation while also increase interest in learning. 3. In topic classes. Teacher should conduct the teaching materials base on a specific topic. The topic should be related to the student’s real life in a suitable level. These topics should cover most of daily situation such as personal information, interest, routines, social activities and work. Third. Here is a topic class lesson plan structured in typical straight arrow. A speaking class course material should include: 1) Engage phase. This Phase is to attract student involving into the class. This could be demonstrated by raising some warm up questions related to the topic, and teacher should encourage students to think and answer in English. 2) Study phase. Step 1, new vocabulary should be introduced in the class by drilling the pronunciation, spelling, meaning and usage. Pictures and teacher’s body languages are recommended to elicit the target vocabulary. Step 2, an exercise such as matching the pictures and words, or fill in blanks using new learning words could be the second step of Study phase. Step 3, a real situation conversation with target languages should be prepared for practicing the meaning and usage. Here teacher can use role play to practice the fluency, and ask relevant questions to make sure the comprehension. Step 4, some other target languages such as grammar structure or useful sentence are also needed in a speaking class. Explain the structure and the usage to student with example sentences. Step 5, exercises base on the grammar or sentence just learnt are needed to enhance the understanding and usage of the language. Teacher should encourage students to use what they just learnt in the lesson. 3) Activate phase. This phase can be given in discussion, role play and even debate. The aim to allow students to practice the target language that they just acquired in the lesson. Examples or hints can be given to students if necessary. Students are encouraged to conduct in full sentences and form correct habits. Last but not least, the purpose of learning. With the development of oversea study and business, business English or English in specific field are in highly demand these days. Teachers should also update teaching materials and methods to cater student’s needs and interests. Adults students are generally highly motivated, and more diligent in learning with suitable approaches. All in all, there are a lot of advantages and opportunities of teaching adults online. As teachers, the very basic rule of teaching adults online is to help these adult students with practical languages skills, so that they could apply and communicate by using English in their life.
