I can start off with why would we want to go abroad and teach English in a foreign country? I'm sure each of us have our own reasons, but I think mostly it is about the experience and to joy it brings to teach someone something new. Shouldn't it therefore be so easy for us to abide by the rules of a certain culture? We are embarking on a new adventure! To be able to teach someone and help them grow and accomplish a goal is such an enriching experience! Each country has their own beliefs, religion and rules which make up the culture of that country. It is important to understand that as a teacher, I am there to teach the students a new language which they can then use around the world. Be it for travel, further studies or even business. As a teacher I'm not there to try teach them my culture. That is definitely not my job. Yes, I can tell them about my culture as part of an informal discussion, but always being considerate to their own cultures. These students have been brought up in the culture of their country, some of which may differ very much from my own. But it is my job to respect that and to abide by their rules. Even when you teach one-on-one extra English lessons at someones private home, you should respect their culture. If it is custom to remove your shoes before you enter, then you remove your shoes. It is all about mutual respect. When you go to a different country to teach, you made that decision as a teacher and even just by applying for a teaching position in a foreign country should by your own actions indicate that you will abide by the cultures of that country. It is important to read up on a country as much as possible before you move there to teach, so that you are completely aware of what cultural rules there might be. I'm sure you will pick up a lot more along the way, but you have at the very least be prepared. While being employed as a teacher you have to abide by the rules of the school, yes obviously we won't always agree with it, like with many things in our lives... but the importance is to respect them. Only if you are willing to respect a certain culture will the students, other teachers and your bosses respect you and see you as a team player. Each country and each culture is unique and fascinating in its own way. I say, take the time and learn about the different cultures that you come in contact with. Embrace each opportunity to learn something new. If you want to ignore the rules of a specific culture in your class, you are only going to make it so very uncomfortable for the students. And in the end, for yourself. It is all about mutual respect. If you want to have the wonderful experience of teaching English abroad, you need to be open minded and respectful at all times.
