There are many benefits for teaching English in an outdoor enviornment or setting. Teaching outdoors provides an outside , real-world experience that has many advantages for both teachers and students. Teachers have the advantage of having the visual world at their fingertips and have countless themes to construct their lessons from. Students can immerse themselves in the English environment and learn by seeing, touching and experiencing the new words they are learning. Obviously there are disadvantages as well, such as some students getting too excited or distracted, but in the right environment with a controlled group size I believe it is a very effective form of teaching. If the activity is organized with a good balance of fun, excitement, and a good lesson, they are more likely to remember the experience and share it with friends and family. This will help to drill new vocabulary and provide a better opportunity to remember the English words they are learning. This can be particulary positive for visual learners who learn better by seeing and experiencing things in person. To prepare a good outdoor lesson it is best to begin in the classroom. Here, the teacher can prepare the activity, explain where they are going and what they will be doing, and engage the students interests prior to the event. The activity can be designed based on the age of the students, the number of students and what the goal is for the lesson. It is a good idea to pre-make flashcards or introduce the new vocabulary ahead of time that way they will already be familiar with the new words. For young children it can be kept very simple, perhaps 5-8 new words and a few action words. The goal is that the children will have fun as well as learn some new words and phrases in English. For adults or more advanced students, and depending on the activity, having an entire lesson prior to the activity is most beneficial. This way it allows the teacher and class to pre-plan the event and create a task sheet or dialogue sheet for the students to bring with them on activity day. Below is an example of an outdoor activity for young learners. A day at the swimming Pool with eight children ages 6-8. This activity will require one teacher and one teaching assistant, as well as any parents for extra supervision and support. Prior to the trip it will be necessary to ensure all parents permission and to guarentee that all kids can swim. However, lets just say that this activity is at a kid friendly pool. In class, the teacher can show a video clip of "The Diary of a Wimpy Kid." The beginning has a great pool scene that is visually very funny and doesn't require much interpretation. This should get the kids laughing and excited to talk about swimming. The teacher can engage the students by tossing a beach ball around and asking questions pertaining to swimming, summer, and playing at the pool. Next, the teacher can introduce the intended vocabulary words for the activity and maybe use and pause the video to point them out. The vocabulary words can be made into flash cards and can be taught prior to the activity and brought to the pool on the day of. The vocabulary for this lesson will be (beach ball, bathing suit, towel, sunscreen, swimming cap and beach bag). The action words will be (swim, jump, stop and go) The teacher can drill the words a head of time and then do a fun memory game using the words. For instance, "I am going to the swimming pool. What do I need to bring?" And try to create a list of items. On the day of the activity and at the pool make sure the parents have packed these items in a bag. Before swimming, the teacher can create an onsite classroom by having the students remove the items from their bag and re-drill the vocabulary. Many fun games can be played to get the students involved, having fun and learning English. They can split into groups or pairs and put sunscreen on eachother as a "game." They can perhaps play a game of hide and seek to find the missing swimming cap. Then they can all go to the pool, hold hands and "jump." In the pool they can perform relay races using the words "stop and go" as well as many games that can be played with a beachball. During the activity the teacher and the assistant can constantly be repeating the same words and get the children to "activate" and scream along. After the swim, the children can have lunch and discuss the day. By the end of the day, the hope is that they had fun and were able to repeat many new words, making this an experience they will go home and want to talk about. And hopefully, if they do talk it will be in English. This is just one example of an outdoor activity with kids, but honestly the opportunities are endless. Some other ideas would be; Adventures at the park, going to a market, going for a nature hike, going to a childrens center, going on a picnic, going to the sea, going to the library, cooking at someones home. All of these activities will provide a positive and engaging learning experience for children, and a memory to remember forever.
