In order to each teach children English online a system should be used that they are familiar with, like applications. The ESA methods of Engage, Study and Activate could also be easily used within a digital application format. You could also incorporate a boomerang or patchwork style lesson plan as the child works through the material. To learn more about the child you could perform a diagnostic test at the beginning of the child’s course or use of the application to gauge where they are in learning English. You could also use this step to find out what the child’s interest are. I think to incorporate authentic materials you could ask the child or a parent to upload pictures of the chid’s surroundings as well as some of their favorite toys, snacks and people in their life. Based on what the child’s interest are you can have created materials within the study stage that are computer generated to include those interest. Examples could include a crossword with their favorite foods, flashcards with their favorite toys or picture stories using their own photos. This personalization of the material really allows the children to become engaged and connected despite not being in a classroom setting. For activate stages within the application you could have the children create stories, simple movies, and even participate in games to help them apply what they have just learned. This is another advantage to teaching online, the opportunities are almost endless and can prevent the child from growing bored. An example of a game for the activate stage would be categorizing newly learned vocabulary words; fruits. The children have a basket of fruits and they need to match the correct fruit to the word of the new language. The tool to put the words on the correct picture could be a sling shot with fun sound effects. Another advantage to teaching children online is that they can audibly hear a word while seeing it on the screen and even watching the word move or correspond to a picture. Because of the speed of technology you may use the engage, study, activate system within a minute or less in one activity or function. You could also place it within the system that children can interact with a live person or other students-this could be beneficial but not necessary. A digital application also allows for there to be built-in evaluations and testing. This could all be recorded and saved and children could easily see their progress. You could use prizes too within the system so that children stay motivated. You could even build the prizes to extend language learning into the real world. For example: "Congratulations, you completed 10 task today. Ask your parents to take you out for a treat but you must order the treat in English". In order to test for pronunciation you could format the app to either use technology and have the child speak into the device or the child could send audio in to a tutor. These are just a few ways that children could use technology to learn English online. I think it is clear to see that it is possible and children could excel doing so.
