With globalization, English became very important worldwide. And with an Internet connection getting better and better all over the world, the study of English (and therefore the teaching of English) became more accessible. Nowadays, there are a lot of different companies and schools that exists online and provide a platform for both students and teachers to learn and teach a variety of languages, without having to leave their houses. So, many adults choose to have lessons in a desired language during their free time. A lot of different reasons to learn a language exists (it may be for work, for fun or by interest), and the level of the student can greatly vary from one person to another. Most of the following comes from personal experience, being an English teacher online myself. To teach adults online, we have to take into account the language level of the student, who tends to vary a lot (some of my students are false beginners, other have a C1 level). Their level in English will often dictate how and what will be done during a class. With beginners, we will have to go slower, have good enunciation and pronunciation, and explain new vocabulary and grammar rules often. Sometimes, the use of their mother tongue will be needed. For more advanced students, we can have a more open discussion, having more of a debate style class, focusing on conversation and self-expression in English, even on topics they might not be too familiar with. Something else we have to keep in mind is the reason why the student wants to have English classes; it will act as a motivation for them. It is important that it is known by the teacher, so he or she can try to make the class according to the student’s needs. A big reason for adults to take English classes is for work. It is sometimes necessary to be hired, or to get a promotion, for example. Another reason could be for general knowledge or liking to learn languages. For these two first reasons, the classes tend to be conversation based learning and revolve around discussions of different topics (to build and use different vocabulary and to express themselves). A different reason are exams. Some students prepare for a specific English certification, and therefore the lessons usually consists of training for that specific certification. Lessons online tend to be one on one. This individual focus allows for a good tutoring of the student, and allow the teacher to make classes specifically designed for the student’s needs and wishes. It also allows a very good tracking of the progress made by the student. Adult learners tend to like a certain degree of difficulty, possible in one on one classes. Even beginners tend to enjoy speaking or reading about more challenging topics, and use the target language as much as possible (even with limited knowledge of that language). Different materials could be used during an online course, depending on what is the point of the lesson. Different articles or texts could be used to improve reading, speaking and understating of a certain topic. Short videos or audio could be used to improve the listening skill. Most adult students prefer to have the material send before the class, so that they can prepare it before we discuss it during the lesson. Teachers can also go over some written work the student has done (potentially as homework), to provide corrections and advice if needed, to progress and study writing skills. In summary, online courses, often being one on one, allow for a very good tutoring of the student. The teacher can adapt the lessons according to the student’s needs, what he or she wants to do and doesn’t want to do. The teacher should keep in mind why the student takes English lessons and their level, when having and preparing for a class with them. Since the students are adults, a certain degree of difficulty should be maintained. Also, discussions between the student and the teacher are possible, to make modifications in how the lesson is being taught or with the material used, to suit the student’s wishes better.
