English should be accepted globally as it’s the second most commonly used language in the world compared to Mandarin Chinese. This is somewhat of a biased response because this is coming from someone who’s born and raised in a country where English is the first language. I would want the world to learn English so that it becomes beneficial and convenient for me when I travel. This is a selfish response and preference. If this topic was asked or directed towards a Chinese individual from China, they’ll say that Mandarin Chinese should be globally accepted. There are several reasons as to why English should be a global language. English is predominately used and recognized throughout many countries such as the United States of America, Canada, United Kingdom, South Africa and the whole continent of Australia. I’ll throw in Antarctica in there as well, as most of the scientists living there are English speakers. China is one country and is on one continent. Although Mandarin Chinese is the most spoken language in the world, globally, it has not established itself, whereas English is more widespread. Besides its global position, the English alphabet is the easiest to understand. Our alphabet system consists of 26 letters, 21 consonants and 5 vowels. The English alphabet is present in other languages such as French, Spanish, Italian and German. This is just to name a few, but this is to point out the similarities. Tourism in Asian countries have recently developed and opened their doors to western tourists. If you go to any airport throughout Asia, the most common language offered especially on signs and directions are in English, other than their native language. There are more languages being offered these days with the assistance of airport kiosks, but overall English is predominantly provided. If you’re going through the terminal at Narita Airport, Hong Kong International Airport or even Incheon Airport, you’ll see big English words representing the name of the airport. English has made its presence worldwide. This doesn’t necessarily mean that the local natives know English fluently. A lot of countries are willing to learn and incorporate English into their system, so that they can communicate with English speaking visitors. Let’s take Japan for example, whom have slowly opened up their country since World War 2. They’ve recently had an influx or a boom in tourism in the past two to three decades. To cater to modern tourist whom are mostly English speaking, their society had adjusted to accommodate for them. Their bus and train systems have English announcements right after the Japanese announcements. If you go to a station like Shinjuku Station for example, why is that written in English and we’re able to say and pronounce name of it even though that’s a Japanese word? This is the influence or the power of the English language. We’re able to apply our pronunciation of the Japanese language using the English alphabet. This has affected the Japanese society in such a way that even in places like restaurants, to cater to foreigners, Japanese people now offer English menus. English should be a global language because most developed countries like the United States of America makes a lot of decisions that influences the world. It’s important for us to understand the real message being broadcasted, and not rely on the local media which can be interpreted. By learning the English language, you’re enabling yourself to determine and make decisions on how these developed countries are going to have an impact towards you. The English learning experience depends on the individual, and how much effort and practice you’re willing to put in. With consistent practice and comprehension, you’ll be able to collaborate and communicate with English speakers and be able to share ideas. If you’re planning on finding a corporate job in the United States, it’s best to practice as much English as possible. In a capitalistic society, many businesses rely on the resources of foreign countries. When an American company outsources their labor or distribution center to another country, they expect that outsourced laborer be reported back to them in English. Many companies offer their employees English teaching programs so that they can become familiar and understand what is required from their jobs. English is a necessity when you’re communicating with someone in the United States. As mentioned above, English should be a global language as it’s already established its presence throughout the world. English can help with trade and diplomatic negotiations so that we’re able to maintain peace. As the second most used language in the world, I believe it’s important not only to make it convenient for us native English speakers, but to also know it for self-knowledge and convenience. With tourism expanding, you would want tourists to spend money in your country. English speakers will tend to flock over to English prepared settings, which will make them feel more welcomed. We’re willing to spend money in areas that are catered for English speakers. South Korea is a developing country that’s evolving their city to welcome westerners. South Korea is not very English friendly yet, and are very proud of their own products. This is changing as South Koreans are picking up English as a second language. They’re progressing towards the same direction as Japan. Lastly, I believe English should be globally accepted because if you’re planning on moving to an English-speaking country to find a better way of life, it’s best to know the language so that you can communicate with the locals or natives. There aren’t any Chinese signs around the major interstates or road ways if you’re traveling within the United States. It’s best to learn English when you’re here or prior to getting here, otherwise you’ll have a hard time. Learning English can provide you with many advantages around the world.
