Reading is an important skill we all need to develop, but it is also a skill that many children find difficult or boring. As teachers teaching English to young students, we should also strive to instill a love of reading in children. Teachers should use books and stories on their classrooms on a regular basis and they can use this reading time to introduce children to English books they will love and ones that will help them as they develop their English skills. Reading helps with vocabulary skills, English skills, grammar, imagination, social skills, and much more. As children read, or listen to stories, they will learn more about the language they are learning. They will also use their imagination more from books than from movies and video games. Teachers should also do their best to encourage parents to read to their children when they are very young. When parents read to their children, they are strengthening their relationship and they can encourage their children to read more. If children are encouraged by their teachers and families, they are more likely to enjoy reading. Teachers should try to find out what children are interested in and find books to meet those interests. There are many opportunities in class and out for children to read or listen to stories and books. Some children lose interest when the book is not interesting to them or if the teacher does not tell the story in an engaging way. Teachers should learn to read to engage children. This would especially be helpful when teaching children English. Some children will need more motivation for learning English and English books and stories that they like will help with that. Books like “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” by Eric Carle is a good example of a book to help with teaching English to young children. It is illustrated very well which helps with visual aids, it is a repetitive book which helps them learn vocabulary, and it deals with the days of the week, food, and numbers. These are important everyday words we use, and this book can help young children learn these words. This book, along with others, can be very influential in helping young children learn English as they are repetitive, use simple vocabulary and grammar. Young children need to be actively involved in the story as much as possible and an interactive read aloud is a good way to get them involved. This way they can help read the words, think ahead to what they think should come next, and they start to enjoy the story more as they are part of telling it. Children look up to teachers and we, as teachers, can have a big part in their lives. As we teach them English, we also need to teach them character, leadership skills, and to enjoy learning. We can use books to help teach all of these. There are so many stories children can learn from and we can use these to encourage them to love reading and learn from the stories they read.
