In this unit I learnt about the role of the teacher in managing the classroom. This included creating a friendly and relaxed atmosphere and consideration of seating arrangements. I learnt about the way that eye contact can be used to engage the students and how gesture and voice can have an impact on the students in the class. I learnt the importance of using students’ names and that they should only be used at the end of a question to ensure that all students are listening. I also learnt about the advantages and disadvantages of group, pair and individual groupings and the impact this can have on student talking time. I learnt that whilst the teacher needs to give clear instructions and a good model of the language there are other ways that information can be provided which does not overwhelm the students. This includes the use of visual aids and consistency of language used to give instructions. I also learnt about the reasons why a teacher might encounter poor behaviour in the classroom, some of which will be beyond the teacher’s control and some of the things a teacher can do to ensure discipline in the classroom. I learnt some of the techniques that can be employed should a teacher encounter poor behaviour.
