This unit teach about classroom management. Classroom management, as describes in this course unit is the process of ensuring classroom lessons run smoothly without any disruptive behavior from students impeding learning. As per my understanding the following classroom management techniques, explains in this course unit, provides a TEFL teacher the required knowledge to develop the skills to effectively keep students organized, focused, attentive on task and academically productive during a class. Eye contact, gesture and voice can be used to hold the attention of the students while delivering a lesson to ensure that the students are focused on the lesson. Grouping students for activities; to the whole class, students working alone, pairs or larger groups should be organized carefully in order to achieve the desired outcome of a lesson. The pros and cons detailed in the unit, if used correctly, will maximize student participation in study and activate stages. Classroom arrangement is utmost important when teaching a language to ensure the maximum student participation in the lesson while maintain discipline. According to the type of space and equipment available, age of the students, nationality and student personality the seating arrangements can be orderly rows, circles & horse shoes and separate tables. The teacher’s position depends on the activity, role of the teacher etc. The techniques detailed under the sections, Writing on the board, Giving individual attention, Teacher talking time and Student talking time, Giving instructions, Establishing rapport with students, Maintaining discipline provides the knowledge for developing classroom management strategies in order to display strong classroom management skills thereby avoiding disorderly classroom filled with students who are not learning or paying attention. Effective classroom management is essential to good teaching. However, identifying the most effective or the best way to approach the management of a classroom is the responsibility of a teacher. A good teacher with effective strategies will be able to minimize the behaviours that obstruct learning while maximizing the behaviours that facilitate or enhance learning.
