Why complete a TEFL course? The question asked by international teachers everywhere; what is the benefit? To answer this question we must first recognize that the answer depends upon the person asking. For those aspiring teachers; with little experience and little qualification; a TEFL certificate can be the perfect way to kick start their career and provide their employer with the certainty that they require. Education and the addition of new skills and knowledge to the mind of an individual; is the only way to evolve and grow; both as a society and as an individual. The gift of knowledge and education is the ultimate gift of all; without knowledge; intellect and education we are nothing, but with it, we are able to strive and climb to the highest of heights. The human mind is a sponge; it thirsts for the water of knowledge. Thus to create a more ideal and admirable world; we must maintain strict discipline in regards to who disseminates this knowledge and which knowledge is to be disseminated; thus the teacher has a heavy responsibility and burden placed upon them. For this; is the reason that we as a society require and maintain “standards” of what is to be taught and how it is to be taught. This reason, to me, seems to be why such certificates and credentials are praised so highly throughout not only the teaching world; but other areas of business and politics; do you have proof from a credible source that you know what it is you profess to know. The first (and perhaps the most important) reason for obtaining a TEFL course; is to become a better and more rounded teacher; many teachers have strong patterns in their teaching; for example, they focus on lectures and essays; but neglect their students’ other skills and abilities with also need shaping and moulding. To complete a TEFL course; opens one's eyes to the sheer number of possibilities and the various ways to teach; with diverse materials and exercises. Within this first reason there is also the possibility that someone taking this course has almost no experience teaching whatsoever; in this case completing a TEFL course is the perfect start to a career and life surrounding ESL teaching; it provides all the necessary materials, resources and advises you upon the skills you must develop in order to teach effectively. The secondary (and less common) reason to complete the TEFL course; is solely for the recognition, which you will gain by completing a certified and international TEFL (provided by a reputable school); perhaps you are already a seasoned and well versed ESL teacher; you’ve “been around the block” a few times; you started your career in a small school and have worked your way up through contacts and the vast experience you have acquired over the years; but now you want to transition to teaching online. And online companies; by law, require you to hold a TEFL or TESOL certificate before you are able to work with or for them. For this reason; it is possible and likely that many more experienced teachers who are on the path of obtaining and completing a TEFL course are doing so because of this. In conclusion, there are usually 2 main reasons people choose to complete a TEFL course; as stated above; however, within these 2 categories, there can be an unlimited variation of sub-categories that will be as different and unique from each other as each teacher will be from the next one. But one thing we can say for certain; completing a TEFL course will certainly add value to your life, as well as to the lives of every student you teach.
