Unit two of this specialized course addresses a wide range of material. Beginning with a summary of the principal general theories of development and learning, the unit moves on to considering how one learns a language, comparing and contrasting the learning of L1 and L2. The pro's and con's of various learning environment arrangements are addressed. An analysis of the student skills the teacher should be encouraging is then provided, both productive skills and receptive skills, but with a description of an alternative matrix of skills and themes sometimes used in private schools. The Unit winds up with an excellent overview of how classrooms and instruction should change as students (and their skills, their interests, and their proclivities) mature.
