This unit is quite brief given the breadth of content that is covers. It begins with an introduction to basic theories about learning, primarily Maturation Theory, Environmental Theory, Constructivism, and other (primarily, cognitive developmentalism). The difference between language acquisition and language learning, and how this relates to native versus second language, is then discussed. In these, and most of the sections, outside reading is suggested for further study. The age groups of “young learners” are broken down into two groups and goals as well as rational for splitting the group is introduced. The ESA structure, which I am familiar with from taking my 120-hour TEFL certification with ITTT, is reviewed. Finally, the concept of maturation is discussed. I appreciated the definition of maturation as a development process, with physical and psychological aspects.
