This unit covers the general theories for teaching, learning and development of young learners. Learning and development theories are outlined and the four major groups are explained and names associated with each viewpoint are listed for further research and reading. This was helpful to learn and gain understanding of the different viewpoints regarding young learners learning and behaviour, I am now aware of what the different theories are. Some of the differences between learning a native language and 2nd language acquisition are explained and direction is given for further reading in the unit. Adopting an approach to teaching young learners is covered. A differing methodology for both groups of young learners which are the 5-9 years of age group and the 9 to 13 years of age group are explained. The straight arrow, boomerang and patchwork methodologies are also explained. This section was helpful to begin thinking about different teaching methodologies and any of the advantages and disadvantages associated with those methods when teaching young learners. The learning environment is defined and different seating arrangements are explained and the suitability and efficiency of each arrangement is discussed. Examples of the types of language that students should be able to use for the two different age groups for each of the four skills of speaking, writing, listening and reading is detailed in the unit. Examples are given for each of the skills corresponding to the level of the student. This part of the unit will be a good future reference for myself and has given me an understanding of what I should expect of students at each level of learning. The term maturation is explained and given context referring to the psycholinguistic development process involving the students ability to understand more developed theories or concepts. Effects on classroom behaviour and the character traits and skills of different age groups are outlined.
