In this unit I learned there is a 5 level scale of testing: Starter, Elementary, Pre-intermediate, Intermediate and Upper-intermediate. Compared to the Common European Framework (CEF) levels, this would translate as follows: A1 Breakthrough (Starter), A2 Waystage (Elementary), B1 Threshold (pre-intermediate and intermediate levels) and B2 Vantage (upper intermediate). There are different syllabus designs, however, the 2 most common would be the structural (where there is a sequencing of grammar taught by complexity) and the functional-notional (where it is based around communicative purposes). It can be further classified as student (what students will see), material (what materials are used at each stage and organizational (how groups and resources will be organized). When creating a syllabus, you need to take into consideration how long the course is, how many progress tests, what language points to cover, what ability/age range is my group of students and finally always leave flexible time to cover any weaknesses as a result of the tests. To assess the students, there are various types of tests: Diagnostic (takes place before the course begins to assess knowledge from past learning), Placement (usually a multiple choice and to group students by their current ability), Aptitude test (predicts probable future performance of the student), the Achievement test assesses student learning of a known syllabus. The Proficiency test assesses the current knowledge and reference to a future task like if the student wants to study Medicine or Law at a UK University. Finally, the Progress test is for specific learning areas taught in the class and are less formal than external exams. This type of test can also inform the teacher about how efficient his/her program is and can motivate the student when they see their progress. As far as examinations are concerned, there are 3 levels of CYLE tests: Starters (for kids age 7 with 100 hrs of study), Movers (kids ages 8-11 with 175 hrs of study) and Flyers (kids ages 9-12 with 250 hrs of study). These lead to higher exams called KET and PET (Key English Test for 13 yrs + at elementary level and Preliminary English Test for lower intermediate students). I never knew about the course evaluation and the end of the course and how this can help evaluate the teacher's material and give the students the opportunity to make suggestions for future reference. It is also useful information to prepare a report if needed.
