Teaching abroad. This is unlike so many other avenues for being able to make a living while in a foreign land, and one I feel to be the most unique. Long ago I asked myself what living abroad would look like, feel, and what exactly could I do to facilitate this dream. I didn't arrive at any easy answers. I have had friends and family that have worked abroad professionally, but never in the realm of teaching English. I had always had a love for food, and as such I worked in the culinary field for most of my adult life, and had never considered teaching food science, let alone English. So how did I arrive where I am, living now for three years abroad? It was a very circuitous route. I met my future wife while traveling through Europe. This posed an immediate problem for me, as I needed to be able to move there, and make a legal living. She is a university teacher, and suggested that this might be the path I should look into. It was almost like a Eureka moment for me. Teaching? Why had this never occurred to me before? They say that necessity is the mother of all inventions, and I think this can be applied to my newly discovered path to love of self, another, and of teaching. I found myself devouring information on how the best way to go about this would be, but at the end of the day a way opened up all on its own. My wife worked at a university in Hungary, and they just so happened to have a need for a native english language tutor for the P.H.D students who required a TESOL to gain employment in their future countries of residence. Shocked, I gratefully took the position, which payed next to nothing but I could not have cared less. I started with very advanced students, and I used various resources available to me. There is an American Corner english program run by the State Department which provided many types of high level readings to me. This was great as I could constantly challenge these students to expand on their already high level vocabularies. I had the most fun by taking the words that were newly learned, and challenging them to fit it into our warm up conversations for the next study session. For already driven students, this sent them into overdrive. They even developed a competition amongst themselves as to who would be able to correctly use the new words. The most challenging of the experiences there were dealing with students applying for grad school, or jobs themselves. Having been an employer in my previous life, I found that I could translate my experiences hiring and building of teams to my advantage. Having mock interviews in English where I would throw them curve balls, and getting them to think on their feet was very hard yet gratifying experience. Though the ultimate payoff for myself was when a student would let me know that they were accepted or hired into the chosen institution or position. I found that this was a perfect way for me to get my feet wet in regards to teaching English. The settings were never very formal, and the rapport that was developed put them at ease, without them having to worry about me grading performances. I think back on this time with great fondness. My next step was where I am today. Living in an entirely different part of the world, and teaching an entirely new type of student. Living in India I started to teach online with a Chinese company working with young learners. It was during this that I realized I needed a stronger foundation in the workings of the English language. Upon asking around with other teachers I was led to this TEFL platform. Its has been a really cool experience, and one that reminds me that I still have a huge amount of improvements I can make, but also that I am better than I though I was. I am really thankful that sites like this exist as it has been a boon for me personally and professionally.
