Continues increase in desire to learn and better speaking and writing skill of English language has become necessary for people to enroll in individual or on-to-one lessons in lieu of being in grouped classrooms. Based on individual preferences, one general reason for students to opt for one-to-one lessons is the belief that one on one lessons would be more geared towards their own needs and wants than a group course could. One on one teaching is tailor-made by the fact that many teachers have developed strategies, materials, and approach, and so to better analyze these specific and significant differences between teaching one to one and groups, we would have to identify the advantages and disadvantages of choosing either and also discuss some techniques and approaches for effective learning. Differences 1. Unlike group classes, one to one classes has no mixed levels, and hence usually has highly motivated students (individual) who is willing and show a lot more commitment to learn. 2. Individual needs are more clearly defined unlike a group class where it is more challenging to settle on specific needs that would suite all students as learners in a group are always more than one (1). 3. Unlike the group class, one to one class requires almost or no classroom management. 4. The timing or pace and structure of a one to one class is almost always or largely determined by the learner more than the teacher as the teacher takes his time to ensure the student is more comfortable with a specific subject before making progress. This is unlike learning in groups. 5. Teaching techniques in group classes can be replicated in a one to one classroom but exceptions are made. Some activities become just impossible to do. Advantages 1. There is significantly high opportunity for student/teacher engagement, real time feedback and general communication and increased rapport. 2. One to one learners have more advantage by using teachers as resource to either ask questions and practice skills almost unlimited. 3. There is much flexibility in teaching as a result of absence of time table, strict teaching plans to adhere to, etc. As a result, there is maximization on the student’s interest and experiences. 4. Teachers also have an advantage or greater opportunity to learn through real interaction with students. 5. The teacher is a one to one group is also saved from the trouble or problems associated with larger groups; mixed abilities, late arrivals, etc. Disadvantages 1. As a result of a single student in a one to one class, some activities become impossible. Hence, more activities need to be researched and deployed. Teachers may find it challenging finding suitable materials and activities to effectively structure a learning plan. 2. There is also the absence of classroom dynamics and a lot more tiredness in a one to one class compared to a group which can result in mental exhaustion for bother learner and teacher. 3. Some learners in a one to one class would remain comfortable in their mistakes with absence of other students. 4. There is a possibility of boredom if a teacher is unable to readily find new approaches to learning. Boredom could also result from leaner's in ability to respond effectively to teachings. 5. There is absence of motivation in a one to one class as there are no other learners to interact, do group work or even receive support. Suggestive Approach. 1. As a result of how personal a one to one can get, it is important to set limits so each (Teacher or learner) do not exceed boundaries. Getting personal also involves exchange of phone numbers as a one to one class is notorious for cancellations and reschedules. 2. There’s a need to complete a needs analysis form to understand students’ needs and future lessons. 3. Find out any practical problems that could interfere with lessons. Example, workload, location, etc. 4. Homework adds value. It is a good tool to make students do things which otherwise couldn’t have been completed in class. 5. There’s the need to make room for flexibility to accommodate special needs and request from students.
