Many don't know the difference between teaching ESL and teaching EFL in the classroom. ESL refers to teaching English as a second language in a English-speaking country where student's native language is not English, while EFL refers to teaching English as a foreign language in a country where English is not the primary language. In the ESL classroom, student's are often from different countries and religious backgrounds which makes it difficult for the teacher as he/she has to be self-conscious about what they are teaching in the classroom so that he/she does not offend any of the student’s. This is also true for EFL teachers but these student’s will probably be from the same country, religion and culture making it easier for teachers to be familiar with one culture vs different cultures. In my experience, in the ESL classroom student's often group with other student's of the same culture and nationality as they feel more confident with someone they have something in common with. This sometime makes it difficult for teacher’s because student’s will often speak their native language. This can also be true in the EFL classroom but everyone will speak the same language. While it might be a choice for EFL student’s to choose to study English, it is more of a requirement for student’s in the ESL classroom to learn English as they are living in a English speaking country, they need to have the communicative skill to speak, write and communicate so that they can live their lives with ease. Their is not much of a difference between ESL and EFL in regards to the language itself, but rather the syllabus content and where the language is taught. Those that are interested in ELF class are those that are business professionals, student’s who want to study abroad and student’s that want to expend their language skills. Those in the ESL classroom are immigrants that need to study English so that they can fit and socialize with society. As a ESL or TEFL teacher it is important that teacher’s stay positive, find a common denominator and be prepared in advance. As an EFL teacher, you will be immersed in a new culture and language and the best way to deal with the new environment is to due your research before you accept a new job offer. Even though both EFL and ESL have their own classroom challenges, the best way for teachers to overcome this is to be open to questions and be repetitive so that student’s understand all the subject that is being taught. The best way to do this is to assign homework and examinations to know how well your student’s are doing in the classroom. In both EFL and ESL classroom, it is important that student’s understand that the only language they should be speaking is English, when student’s are often frustrated, confused or don’t understand something in the subject, they sometimes ask their fellow classmates to translate. I think that teachers should always encourage everyone to speak English so that by the end of the semester they should be able to form sentences.
