Learner objectives: Students will be able to identify the colors used in the story without help; students can verbally describe the types of animals that were included in the story. Personal aims: Improve my story telling skills for children. Anticipated problems for students: Understanding the concept of adjectives and nouns. Solutions: Effective, visual examples in the book. Anticipated problems for teacher: Getting all students in the class involved in all activities. Solutions: Make actives fun by maintaining my enthusiasm and changing my tones. Procedure: Engage: I will introduce the students to the book and begin reading to the students. I will ask students what animals and colors they can see. First I will let them share as many animals and colors that they have known. Ask students questions such as: what does each animal see? What do the children in the book see? Have you ever seen any of these animals in real life? Practice 1: The grade level that I would be teaching is elementary ESL students. The book that I will be introducing to them and reading is Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? The author of the book is Bill Martin, Jr., and the illustrator is Eric Carle. First I will start telling the children that we have a special book which we will be reading today. We will all gather in a circle. I would make sure that all the students are sitting and ready to listen as I read them the title of the book using my pointer to point at each word. I will read the book to them slowly so that they can follow and take in what each animal sees and the color of each animal. This will take about ten minutes. Study: Once we have finished the book, I will ask students what kinds of animals were in the book. I will also ask them if they can remember the different colors that were in the book. Write key words on the white board, and then conduct the 3x3 drill. This part will ten minutes. Practice 2: After we read the book I plan to use a big poster to map the story by listing all the animals in the book starting with the brown bear. The children will help by telling me which animal the brown bear saw. Each animal will lead to another animal until we get to the children in the book that will show they saw all the animals. Completing the map and remembering the color of the animal from the book will take about twenty minutes. This lesson will help students to become familiar with the animals and their colors. I believe this book will open the creativity side for children to explore colors and animals. They will want to learn more about animals and their colors. Students may want to see more animals once they have a chance to go to zoo with their families. That will be a good opportunity for them to review those vocabularies that they have learned from this session.
