Forming a lesson plan : The structure of a lesson plan can be fluid. Depending on the style that works best for you as a teacher ,adjustments will be made to your lesson plans. As you get to know your students better and figure out a teaching style that works for both you and your students you will have a better idea of planning for your classes. This will take time, and you don’t have to stick to only one style of planning for every lesson. Things to remember: Each of your lessons should be catered towards improving your students abilities to be able to move on to the next lesson with understanding. Each lesson plan should be tailored to the last lesson, in order to work on the points the students struggled with, and to add new topics like new grammar and new vocabulary with each lesson. Think of a fun and creative way to get the students talking. For example you can: Have a group discussion about a topic that you choose. Be sure to explain the process clearly and slowly for everyone to understand. You can give the first example so that students can have a better idea of what they are supposed to do. “What do you like to do during the summer time. Do you like to go to the park? Go hiking? or go swimming? etc. and if so why do you like to do these things in the summer. “ Teacher: “ I like to go to the beach in the summertime because I like to go swimming in the water. I also enjoy sitting outside under the sun on the beach .” This can be a way to help you figure out your students english levels. The vocabulary that they feel comfortable using, how much vocabulary they know and what words are easier for them to use clear pronunciation. Each student learns at a different pace and some may be more ahead of other students which is ok. You shouldn’t get too worked up on finding one lesson that fits everyone. Don’t be afraid to walk around and take a look at your students and the work that they are doing. 1. “A good teacher will monitor the quality of his/her own lessons” It is important to be aware of the topics your students already understand, what they don’t understand and what you want to teach them. You don’t want to be teaching students the same thing over and over when they already have a great understanding of the topic, but do not be afraid to take the extra time to help the students who do need the extra help. No students left behind. Your goal is to help further the knowledge of your students. Engagement: Keeping students engaged during lessons can sometimes be difficult. When things get too repetitive students may get bored. Students can be shy and afraid to speak up. When a student doesn’t understand the information they may be discouraged to learn. It is important to be aware of these signs and to motivate your students to want to learn. Have idea ready, to be able to handle these situations. Games or group work is a great way to keep your students engaged. Don’t stick with one method for the whole lesson. You can do 15 mins of games and then switch to 15 mins of group work , and switch back to some more games. Conclusion: Don’t stress too much about the logistics of the lesson plan. Once a class starts you will be able to adjust and arrange things as needed, depending on the interactions you receive from your students. Don’t be afraid to veer off from the exact notes you may have written down for your lesson. You have your lesson plan to help guide your class, and provide structure, but it doesn’t have to be word for word on what you plan on saying in class. Be relaxed, be kind, and be understanding of your students. Enjoy what you’re doing and your students will enjoy the class as well. Reference: ( ITTT course quote; lesson planning)
