There are many reasons why it is important to be a confident teacher. It is proven that confidence within a teacher can increase productivity and happiness of the students. Pupils can usually tell if the teacher lacks in confidence, and from that they can create a disturbed environment which can become hard for the teacher to keep control. This can lead to high stress levels in the teacher and in some cases cause them to find new employment. Listed below are a number of ways teachers can improve confidence in the classroom: • Dress to impress • Fake it till you make it • Be prepared • Work on improvement • Practice Dress to impress There are a series of things in order to become a successful teacher. Dressing smart and in a way that makes the teacher feel good will automatically give them confidence. Often people get judged by their appearance, so being clean and well-dressed is therefore respected and appreciated. Student’s model behaviour they observe and see their teachers as examples, so by just being clean and well turned-out it can have a positive impact. The teacher must follow the dress code policy of the school or centre they work at. Fake it till you make it “Fake it till you make it" suggests that by pretending to be confident, competent and having a positive attitude, a person can realise that they actually have these assets, and therefore change their behaviour. Practicing being confident can help create a positive attitude by doing small things, such as changing body language. Just by having a good posture can give off a sense of confidence, which will reflect back and make the person feel confident themselves. Another way to boost confidence is by thinking about achievements in life. Things that make a person grateful and proud of can create a confident perspective, giving them hope to achieve what they are currently doing. These examples can be used to increase a teacher’s confidence in the classroom. Be prepared When arriving in a new country, it is good to get general knowledge such as culture, religion, and people. It is appropriate to get an understanding about the different cultures and to know how the country operates. When it is time to start the first lesson, the teacher must be fully prepared by ensuring the lesson plan is complete with some additional activities in case there is spare time. The teacher should make sure they have all the materials needed for that lesson before it starts, and it is recommended to run through the lesson beforehand so the teacher will feel more confident giving the lesson if they know what is happening next. It is also good to have achievable goals for the lesson. To be able to teach students; especially where English is not their first language, it is important to be clear, talking slowly and in a simple manner so it is understandable. Practicing hand gestures and even parts of the lesson, in front of the mirror beforehand will help the teacher become more confident in executing the lesson. It is also a good idea to think about the potential problems that the teacher might face and consider the ways these can be corrected and handled. If the lesson is well planned and organised then there should be no issues and nothing to worry about. This will make the teacher feel more confident that they will provide a good, informative and well-rounded lesson. Work on improvement Everyone has strengths and weaknesses. There will be times where the teacher has an unsuccessful lesson. Sharing the lessons with work colleagues will give a chance to talk over what happened, and to share tips and tricks on how to improve. This will support everyone and also help increase confidence. Another way to improve upon weakness in lessons is to make a video of them. Noticing the areas of strengths and difficulties from the video will help the teacher understand what is going wrong. Writing these issues down it is a way of being able to work on them, step by step to improve. Working on these issues can improve the teacher’s confidence as they become more comfortable with the class. Practice Practice makes perfect. By connecting all the above points together, teachers can improve on their confidence by making small changes and making sure they are always prepared for the lessons ahead. However the most important thing to remember is the more they teach, the more confident they will become.
