First I would like to start by saying that I´m a non-native speaker ESL Teacher. I have studied English as a second language since I was in grammar school, and at 19 years old I took a 120 hour local Teaching Training Course. I have taken several English courses since then, and even lived in Philadelphia, USA for one year and in London, UK for 6 months in order to improve my language skills and to get more familiar to the cultural slangs and natural way of speaking. I recently finished my onsite TEFL course last March 2018 in Italy. I have taught English in several ambiences and to different CEFR levels, and ages for about 18 intermittently years. What I have learned over these past years about teaching English is that I always must be updated and never assume things or take them for granted. My first ESL teaching job was at a Language School, they had all kinds of students, YL, children, business people, adults just wanting to learn English, in this job I was provided with all the syllabus and one day before the class, I was told which group I was going to teach the next day, so I would change from Doing Business topics to really beginners or even children the same day, this gave me a lot of practice and confidence , at first I was worried about teaching to the business people since they were much older than me and of course they knew what we were talking about while sometimes I didn’t. What helped me is that all the teacher’s books were there to help so I was just following a program, there was not much information on internet, or it was starting so it was not a tool used for looking for material, dictionaries, etc. In this job I had not to worry about the targets of the students, not even for the assessments since the school would do that. After that job for a couple of years, I started working in a private elementary school, I was the head ESL teacher for 1st and 2 grades, I started using a lot of non- authentic materials most of them created by me. The school had editorial material as well, so even I had to create my lesson plans, they were about the program from the books. The assessments and end of school year tests were prepared by each head teacher according to the program and supervised by the coordinator. My first ESL teaching experience outside Mexico, my country, was in Italy while taking the TEFL course, which was amazing because I could teach people who didn´t speak my language as in Mexico, so it really challenged me as an ESL teacher. Afterwards, I went to Nepal to do volunteering teaching for 2 months in a Boudhist monastery to the children who live there, it was also a huge challenge, with little technology, no materials and a different culture. These experiences gave me the confidence about teaching abroad. Nowadays back to Mexico, I create my own lesson plans and syllabus. I´m more aware of my student’s needs, the lesson planning and how to work on each skill either they need, or they want to improve. Most of my lessons are one to one, some online and some in-house, most of them adults, from A1 to C1. I can clearly see the advantages and disadvantages mentioned in the CTBE course about teaching “one to one”, the one I find the most challenging to deal with is no pair work, so the client is always expecting to have a comment or word from the teacher specially if they are shy. I try to create integrated syllabus since I believe that practicing different skills will make the difference. I use a lot of non-authentical material as “TED TALKS”, especially for my business clients, I pick related topics to their jobs and I create a whole lesson plan around it, it´s time consuming but the outcome is great, at least it has worked out very well for me. I also use some of the British Council website material as well from the Cambridge Practice Exams webpage, specially for listening and reading. Having taken the CTBE adds a lot of knowledge, tips, material, and guidance that I´ve been putting into practice. All the information about Business Etiquette, Cv, and Finding Employment it´s very useful.
