After graduating college, I wanted to dive head first into the teaching field, and to help in developing the next generation of young minds. When I came to North America, I was placed in school and soon after into the ESOL program. This experience had a real impact on me as a child and has stayed with me all my life. Because of that experience, I looked into teaching English to students of other languages in my local schools, but was told all of the positions required me to get a completely different degree than what I had already earned. I was told to just go back to college or university and get a graduate degree in education, but I am not made of money and a graduate degree is beyond my means at the moment. Thus, I decided to look into becoming a substitute teacher for my county’s school board. After a lot of applying and interviewing, I was finally hired on as a substitute teacher and given the opportunity to step into the field of education. I have been a substitute teacher, for a variety of subjects, for almost a full year now, and have a good amount of experience with teaching mostly in primary schools. I decided to take a short break from substitute teaching to analyze what I know and what I still need to learn. I did pretty well with teaching children under the age of nine years old, but soon realized I struggled quite a bit with understanding the needs of the older children. I decided to face the reality of my shortcomings with teaching, and admitted to myself that my skills and abilities in teaching young children could use some improvement. I looked at what I could do to better my skills, my abilities, and myself. Following a lot of research, I found I could become certified in teaching English as a foreign language and find work beyond the limits of my boarders. I took the 120-hour TEFL online course, and found it to be very enlightening. I feel the knowledge gained was well worth the investment. Moreover, I can now work almost anywhere around the world, as my certification is recognized globally. I also wanted to further enhance my teaching abilities with young children as soon as possible; therefore, I decided to complete the additional 50-hour CTEYL online course. I found the course to provide a different approach to what I was normally practicing in my daily life as a substitute teacher. I feel the knowledge I have gained will help me with any weaknesses I may have had in the past about teaching young children. I believe since the course provided me with so many additional strategies and tactics to deal with the older children, I can face them more confidently without any fears. I cannot wait until my next class session, as I know I have become a better teacher now; subsequently, this knowledge will help push me forward to reach my dream of shaping the minds of tomorrow.
