Teaching EFL to kindergartners can be challenging. Introducing a new language, especially English, can be difficult for children who are just beginning to become comfortable with their mother tongue. At the same time it can be a fun job if one knows the style of teaching by delivering the whole lesson in a totally fun way. Teacher’s responsibility is not only to focus on the content or vocabulary but also to enhance their social skills and equal participation. While teaching children, he/she may find it difficult to maintain the discipline without being too strict, so in order to maintain the trade-off, the teacher has to bridge this gap. For this reason, it’s important to always listen to the students irrespective of whatsoever the subject is, in order to earn their trust. This can be achieved by planning the lessons differently by introducing fun games, using visuals, toys etc., making alphabet songs that rhyme with their nursery rhymes, showing animated objects for relating an object with a name, creating fun play time activities with kids that involve words and sentences, creating themes of cartoons or animations including study material and giving rewards and appreciation to all the students at the end of the activity. These are some methods that encourage them to participate actively. Apart from the usual responsibilities of teachers, they must teach the students about classroom manners and etiquettes like how to behave in the classroom and play nicely with others. It may be a good idea to spend time with the children in recess outside the classroom. Children have short attention spans, teaching in different style like playing games is a great way to teach as it makes the students learn how to have conversations, build relationships, learn real life applications, builds social skills. EFL at a Kindergarten age prepare the children to understand reasoning and interpretations at a young age hence they can carry & learn more about these skills with perfection till the time they grow up. Because every student is not same, teacher may find it difficult to carry the course along with the time. Therefore it’s always a good idea to plan the lesson. Another important thing is to choose the correct game as one game might be suitable for a particular group but difficult for others. And at the same time the game should be relevant to the subject that is being taught. Play a game where everyone wins. - Encourage them and never say “you can’t do it”. - Involve shy students and try to make them participate equally. Teaching kindergartners may be a little difficult task but if one enjoys teaching and knows the technique, it might be best job to educate the young minds of this era.
