Other than teaching and imparting knowledge, a teacher assumes many roles in the classroom. This is why teaching is so fun and exciting! Mentor. As the students spend a great deal of time in the school, (other than their own home), the school is a place where values and character can be molded. The interactions between classmates are also a hotbed for the students to learn about managing personal emotions, managing/ building relationships, and responsible decision making. Therefore, the teacher often has teachable moments where they can leverage on situations to help the students process their experiences and thereby building their character and values. As values are also often caught and not taught, the students often look upon the teachers as a role model and learn from the teachers by watching them. Very often, we will be surprised by what the students can catch just by watching our interactions with the class and our colleagues. Learning facilitator. A teacher should be able to identify the learning gaps of the students based on observations in the classroom. With that knowledge, the teacher can craft learning goals and plans for the student to help them become better. While teaching, the teacher should also inspire in the students a love for learning, so that learning does not stop in the classroom. A facilitator means that the teacher facilitates the learning, he/she does not merely spoon-feed the students but give them the skills to gather new knowledge on their own. Disciplinarian. Anything can happen in a classroom. Students can act up, quarrel, fight, or do things that are against the rules of the school. As a teacher, discipline must be enforced in every situation that surfaces to the knowledge of the teacher. Left unaddressed, discipline issues can become big issues in later life, and immediate issues in the classroom. As an educator, we do not just want students to be knowledgeable, we also want them to be good and useful citizens in the society that can contribute positively. We want to ensure that we produce students who are not just good in their academics but also good in their moral values. Supporter. Support for the students comes in many ways. Support for them in their learning, especially for those who might have learning difficulties. The encouragement and support of teachers would often be very critical for these students to help them to keep on going. Support for students who might have problems at the home front; parents who are divorced or often quarreling, terminally ill parent or even those who are in single parent homes. When students do not get the required support from the home, the support from the teacher becomes very important. Often, it is when students are emotionally healthy, can they learn well in school. Learner. As a teacher, we do not want to just teach. We should be a life-long learner. Only when we keep learning, will we keep growing. This is especially so in this current digital world when things change so fast. If we do not keep learning to keep ourselves current and updated, we may become obsolete very soon; not just in our teaching methodologies but also in the way we relate to our students.
