Roles of a teacher Teachers have many roles to do when teaching students in a classroom. Listed below are 6 roles and descriptions of a teacher roles. • Tester Testing students before, during and at the end of the course work. • Friendly Environment. Teachers should create a friendly environment. • Encouragement. Teachers should give encouragement to all students. • Participant. Teachers taking part in classroom activities. • Discipline. Undertake disciplinary action when necessary. Tester One of the most important roles of a teacher before commencing any lessons, is that of testing students knowledge of the language they are about to learn, if the school or center haven’t carried out any testing before hand. Diagnostic test should be undertaken to evaluate students knowledge of what they know or don’t know of the language. This will also help the teacher to find the correct books and materials suitable to their learning abilities. Class assessment testing should be undertaken at regular stages during the whole process. This will enable the teacher to make necessary changes when required, also to make sure students don’t fall behind. Teachers can then make changes, so students learn more effectively. End of course testing is an important role for a teacher to undertake at the end of the course. Testing will show what students have learned from the beginning to the end of the course. End testing will also give a teacher information on whether to change the course work in the future and to what students need to work on more during the whole process next time. Friendly environment First and foremost role of a teacher in a classroom is to create a friendly environment. This will make students feel comfortable in the classroom and they will feel more at ease too. Teachers should not bring their personal or bad feelings into classrooms, as this might bring down the moral of the students and have an negative affect on their abilities to learn. A friendly teacher is more encouraging than angry teacher. Smiling and having fun helps too. Participant When a teacher participates this will improve the atmosphere in the classroom between students and the teacher and a teacher can guide his/her students when they are doing their activities but a teacher should only take part as little as possible. Encouragement Teachers should encourage students to learn by correcting mistakes without giving unnecessary comments about the students work. Marking students work with encouraging remarks helps, rather than negative remarks. When possible a teacher should talk one on one with the students, as this is far better than just writing remarks on paperwork and also which is more effective. Encouraging students in the classroom to think for themselves should also be carried out, this will allow the students to think for themselves. Discipline Teachers sometimes have to discipline students, but in a manner that is neither aggressive or threatening. Teachers should discipline students by talking to them privately outside the classroom or talking to their parents if necessary. It may be necessary only also to give extra homework and therefore no other action will need to be taken. If the behavior of the student is excessive the teacher should remove the student from the classroom, if they are disturbing other students or stop them from coming to class altogether.
