Finally, I'm finished! These are my exact words after my College graduation. Goodbye tests, research, and homework. I can't wait to start teaching. After passing the Licensure Exam for Teachers, I'm now equipt with my diploma and license I felt that these are all the things I need to begin my teaching career. Luckily, I was hired as an English teacher in a government school here in the Philippines, the moment that I set foot inside the classroom I knew it was my destiny. Years passed I realized I needed to learn more. My four years in college isn't enough, my students then are different from my students now, they were evolving and so should I. I used to become frustrated with the thought of professional development. I used to brush off the idea of continuing education because I just finished my bachelor's degree and It needed time and so much money. I just want to ignore it. But then I saw my colleagues improving, maturing and they even got promoted before me. Though it needed some efforts they seem to be happy with it. That's when I started to think about it thoroughly. I evaluated myself, my strengths and my weaknesses. With that, I became aware of how much I still have to learn in order to do well as a teacher. That same with my students, I should also be a continuous learner myself. There's a lot of changes in the curriculum and ways of teaching, even laws are changing over the years that career development is essential. Whether it's a seminar, training or conferences even short courses like this makes a big impact on my development as a teacher. You can't teach what you don't know, you can't give what you don't have. That's why career development is very important in teaching. Even the educational system requires the teacher to participate in various professional development classes. As a teacher, we need to be knowledge hungry all the time. We should always consider our impact on the lives of our learners, they look up to us. We are their models, such power comes with great responsibility. So never stop learning, find ways to better yourself, in the end, this is not just for you but for your students as well. You need to seek opportunities to improve your skills. Set up your goals, plan and find ways to achieve it. This will ensure that you will become a better version of what you are now. A concrete development plan is not necessary but a necessity. Now that I started this journey, I felt fulfilled. I know I still have a long way to go for this is a never-ending journey but I'm proud of what I accomplished by taking the first step of developing my teaching career. I'm full of hope in achieving all my career goals, anyways it isn't just for me but for my dear students as well. Why is the teacher career development important? Just think of the endless possibilities of being the best in your field. It also opens a lot of opportunities for you. Do not hesitate, just take the first step and hopefully, all your efforts will be paid off.
