‘What skills do you need to be a good teacher?’ Teaching is a profession and requires not only a range of academic skills but a communication skill that provides learning activities that engage their students and, in this topic, to learn the English language as a second language. Teaching is the platform for education from the Elementary to the University levels that provides students the fundamental right to learn. The teaching of English as a second language provides students with opportunities within their community for work, higher education and acceptance to Universities in English speaking countries for higher professional aspirations. The teaching of English as a foreign language (TEFL) provides the student with an abundance of new opportunities and a greater awareness of the world. As we have learnt during the TEFL course there are a range of fundamentals to the practice of teaching. ‘Teaching Skills in the Classroom’ require a teacher to ‘Plan, Prepare Lesson Plans and Activities that create learning activities.’ In researching what are important personal skills for being the best teacher, you should have – ‘Patience, Adaptability, Imagination and Communication,’ (WWW.Best-job-interview.com and Unit 1 TEFL). These are just some of the personal skills required to achieve a successful learning outcome in the classroom. The teacher’s personality and their ability to relate is an important teaching skill. No matter what their knowledge level or qualifications or how well they have prepared a great lesson plan, it matters not if they cannot engage their class. ‘Engage the class no matter what level or the lesson’ is a constant for a good outcome in the classroom.’ Teaching a foreign language (TEFL) also requires the teacher to have a knowledge of customs as to provide an appropriate engagement, ‘that engages and motivates an aspiration to learn’ (TEFL Course) and that the teaching resources are appropriate to classroom levels but also to their indigenous customs. There are a range of recommended methods and processes but in the end, it is about, Engage, Study and Activate for the best learning outcomes. As we have learnt during the TEFL course there are a range of engagement options which in itself depends on the personality of the teacher with examples such as: Manager or Controller, Organizer, Assessor or prompter and the importance of these engagements being used at the ‘right time’. In summary an enthusiastic, sensitive, motivated and caring teacher is more likely to inspire learning and whose students will enjoy their learning experience. Importantly when teaching English as a second language it is very important that the teaching style is culturally sensitive and also age appropriate for the best outcome. Teachers need to learn the local culture, understand the needs of parents and the community and keep their engagement appropriate to the aspirations of the students. Asian and European cultures have some distinctive differences with that of Western cultures and understanding the local culture helps to engage with students and not cause offence which would undermine the credibility of the teacher and could lead to students being disengaged. A teacher who shares some of his or her life experience in a culturally acceptable way can engage students with examples of the benefits of learning English to demonstrate the benefits of English to their future which in turn will encourage engagement. A quote from a Vietnam Academic, “Vietnam can develop faster if Vietnamese are good at English.” English can open the doors to a new world, to greater learning, job opportunities and provide greater life options for all levels of society. In my opinion teachers should always provide some vocational advice to demonstrate the benefits of English for a range of professions which could include education overseas but to never forget the benefits to those who will follow a trade or small business owner or in the case of Vietnam the jobs in the travel/hospitality industry which requires more and more people who have English as a second language. The bonus of having a second language will always improve your job prospects. The role of the teacher in society can never be underestimated and teachers should never under value their skills or role in providing a platform for learning, ‘that engages and motivates an aspiration to learn.’
