Teach English in Yanshi Zhen - Heze Shi

Everyone has his/her own needs and characters,so he/she has his/her own way to live and learn.It’s not practical to use the same treating way to cover all the students when we are their teachers.But it’s also impossible to treat each person according to their individual characteristics.Will we lose the quality of teaching if we can’t know each one well? It won’t be that case.Generally,we can divide students into two categories:young learners and adults.We can have the good quality of teaching by treating them in the proper way. It will be helpful to treat young learners and adults if we know more about their common characteristics.In my opinion,young learners are erratic.They are curious about everything.They are eager to seek answers for what they don’t know or what they are interested in.But the passion will fade soon when they find something is difficult on the way,or when they find it may take a long time to do it.There are many reasons for young learners to give up learning.It doesn’t mean that they don’t want to learn something new well.Put it another way,we can say that young learners need someone to guide them to learn.The guides can be parents,teachers,friends,the peer competitors,idols,famous aphorism,even can be simple things from their life.Young learners are very malleable,they need a good guide around .As teachers,trying best to be their friends is one of the most important ways to treat and guide them.Having good rapport with our students as a friend is different from having good rapport with them as a teacher.Being students’ friends, they will feel relaxed in our class.They won’t guard us out of fear.In this case,we can have a comfortable and fair way to communicate with them.They would like to share us with what they want and what they think in and out of the class,then we can target the right teaching for them better.Besides,as teachers,playing a role as “school parents” is also a good way to treat our students.Generally speaking,Young learners are those who are under the age of 18,mostly they don’t have sure ideas to deal with problems,and they don’t have enough experience to solve all the problems they meet in life and study.They will feel lost sometimes.In this case,we can take care of their daily life problems as well as study problems like parents.Students will trust us more and are more likely to ask us for help and advice.Then we can know them better and teach them properly.In brief,for young learners,we try to treat them with equal relationship,patience and love. For adults,this is a group which is different from young learners.Usually,unlike young learners,we need much more time to guide adults to make up their mind to take the first step instead of keeping their motivation in the process.They have their own life experience,they have their own way to learn,they are used to regular things, which will stop them from accepting new things easily.In this case,how teachers treat their adult learners?First,try to analyse the good and the bad clearly for them.When adults come to us for a new language learning information,it doesn’t mean they will take the step immediately, that only means they want and still doubt.Most of the adults know what is good and what is bad ,but they still feel upset when they are exposed to new things.As teachers,we need to have an effective talk with them,or they may give up after consulting.Try to let them know what benefits they can get by learning the new language with our professional perspective.Help them to clear up the doubts and nervousness.It may take time,but it is a vital part to treat the adult learners.Once adults have taken the first step into learning without doubts,it will be more effective for us to teach them because they are motivated.Second,be professional and rigorous in front of your adult learners.Most adults can judge and accept things maturely and rationally.They prefer to learn from someone who they recognize.If a teacher can’t help them with their learning questions or often makes silly mistakes ,they will think that the teacher is not qualified enough to teach them.So it’s very important for teachers to present professionally and rigorously in the teaching filed.Convince the adults with the expertise and rigorous attitude. In summary, good teaching requires a lot.How to treat our students which are divided into young learners and adults is one of the keys,and it’s necessary for teachers to concern.
