Summative Response Why Complete a TEFL Course Marisa Mozak Why I chose TEFL Recently, I spent five weeks backpacking in Southeast Asia. This was truly one of the best and most eye opening times of my life. Having grown up in a small town in the Midwest in the United States, I was not able to be immersed in the culture and history that I was shown in Asia. If I am being honest, the people that I met along the way are what made the trip the exciting, fantastic, and incredible experience that it was. It was actually one of the hostel owners who planted the seed of teaching English abroad in my head. The hospitality and generosity of the locals made me want to give something back to them. Maybe teaching was my chance. I talked to several people that stated that English teachers are in high demand not just in Thailand but all over the word. Teaching is something I firmly believe that I can do, I have tutored before (mainly math) but always felt accomplished when I was done. This could be my key to not only living abroad and having a life changing experience, but also to impart some of my knowledge on others, and be a contributing part of their culture and economy, not simply a tourist. Meeting the locals and being taken to their favorite spots around town, getting home cooked meals from theirs families, and getting to really live in another culture was something I will take with me forever. The only downfall at the end of the day was that I was a tourist. Living in such a beautiful part of the world tourists will flock. Although many tourists can be respectful, there are also those that litter, congregate, and are insensitive to others and their beliefs which I unfortunately saw quite frequently. I told myself that next time I went abroad; it would be to live there and to leave the country a better place than I found it. Upon arriving back home I started heavily researching the TEFL class to see where it could take me, and if I was qualified. I also talked to other friends who had taught abroad and about their own experiences. I have done one on one tutoring off and on since the eighth grade and it was a very rewarding experience. It does take some time to get to know the student and what works for them, their interests, etc. I know that teaching a full class will be a learning curve; however, I am confident in my ability to put together a lesson plan according to my classes needs. I have worked in the service industry for more than ten years, and I am confident in my ability to read a room and the needs of the customer. This would be a great benefit to my role as a teacher, knowing that everyone learns differently and you need to be able to roll with the punches, so to speak. I look forward to the next steps in becoming a teacher and cannot wait to get started!
