How to teach beginner students English is a very complicated task. First, the students must be given a placement test to find out what level of class they should be placed in. The test should be very comprehensive; starting off relatively easy and escalating as the test progresses. It should include multiple choice questions, fill in the blank questions, and oral response questions. It is very important that a student is placed in the correct course so that the student does not feel out of place or overwhelmed by the English being taught and expected of them. As a teacher, I should get to know the names of each student by recognizing their face and greeting them as they enter the classroom or if I have to call on them as raise their hands to respond to a question. It is important as a teacher to make sure that the student is in the correct class level. The way a teacher finds out is by formal and informal ways such as games and projects. If I feel a student needs extra help with an English assignment, I can add extra homework outside of class time to address the problem. It is my responsibility to keep the students interested in the course material and constantly check to verify everything I teach is being retained and understood. I, as an English teacher need to know and find out if the student or students are taking the class to qualify for an outside exam; this way I can know what is expected of the students. The course book required by the teacher and or school is a very good measuring stick to understand what is expected of the students and any outside exams. As a teacher, I will need to get a basic background on the students in my class. This will include interests, hobbies, and future career plans. The age of the students will be a very important factor as to how I teach my English lessons. I will not expect young students to retain and be able to write and speak English after a few weeks or months of English lessons. I will expect young beginner students to be eager to learn and retain as much information as possible. I, as an English teacher will progress with the beginner English students and move forward as time and progress reports show. I have various tools at my disposal to help any student who might be struggling during the English course. For example, extra teacher to student interaction, more interaction with the parents of the student, or specially designated homework for the student. The Internet and various other resources are filled with information for beginner English students. The students need to be motivated to learn inside the classroom and outside the classroom. Students should be rewarded for retaining the English language they have learned and continue to practice everyday. There are many outside placement tests once a beginner English student has achieved a overall understanding of the English Language. These tests include "TOEFL-Test of the English as a Foreign Language. This is an American English exam that is required by most US universities for admission purposes if the prospective student is non-native speaker of English. This test is virtually all multiple choice (writing paper excepted) and covers grammar, vocabulary, reading, writing and listening. The TOEFL has recently added a speaking element. The TOEFL exam is one test for all levels, either on paper or computer-based. A student doesn't pass or fail, but gets a final score, which equates to his/her level. The score that universities require varies, but the score requirements range from 133 to 250 (computer based) or 450 to 600 (test on paper). International English Language Testing System. The ideal test if a student needs to study or work where English is the language of communication. International English Language Testing Systems scores are recognized by universities and colleges, employers, immigration authorities and professional bodies. The Test Of English for International Communication, is probably the most widely recognized test on work-place English proficiency in Japan and Korea. It measures the ability of non-native English-speaking tests to use English in everyday work activities. Originally examining only two communication skills, reading and listening, The Test Of English for International Communication was originally based on the Test of English as a Foreign Language test. The test lasted for two and a half hours and had 200 multiple choice questions; 100 questions for listening comprehension and 100 questions for reading comprehension. More recently, writing and speaking communications have been added." Quoted from International TEFL and TESOL Training© Where the world is your classroom.
