What is the distinction between formal and informal language? To know when to use formal language and when to use informal one is a big part of mastering a language. Formal and informal languages are for different purposes. The diversity between the styles of these two languages is based on the choice of words and how the words are put together. Unlike informal language, the formal one is less personal. It is used for professional or academic purposes like writing a thesis in the university. It is important to mention that first-person pronouns such as ‘I’ or ‘We’ are absent from formal language, as well as contractions. Informal language is spontaneous and more casual. It is mostly used in our daily life when communicating with friends or family either in writing or in conversation. It is used when writing text messages, personal emails. Thus, informal language is more personal than formal language. Here are some examples showing the difference between formal and informal language: Contractions Informal: Articles on the site have certainly asserted things which aren’t in fact true. Formal: Articles on the site have certainly asserted things which are not in fact true. Informal: Leo wasn’t very good at mountain climbing as he’s afraid of heights. Formal: Leo was not very good at mountain climbing as he is afraid of heights. First person pronouns Informal: We think that over 20000 people will go to the pop concert. Formal: The pop concert is expected to attract over 20000 people. Informal: I saw the burglar getting into the museum through a window. Formal: The burglar was observed entering the museum through a window. Phrasal verbs Informal: Scientists are trying to find ways to reduce pollution from aircraft. Formal: Scientists are trying to find the solution to reduce pollution from aircraft. Informal: They were knocked out in the semi-final. Formal: They were removed from the semi-final. Colloquialisms Informal: A bunch of people was gathered to watch the show. Formal: A number of people were gathered to watch the show. Informal: Two companies make a deal. Formal: Two companies make an agreement. Formal language is used in situations that are serious or that involve people we don’t know well. Informal language is usually used in situations that are more relaxed and involve people we know well. Formal language is more often used in a written form, while informal one is more common in a spoken form. However, there are cases when a written form can be used in an informal language when writing text messages, emails or letters to friends, as well as spoken English can be used in a formal language, while giving a speech or a lecture. Like language, education is also distinguished into two terms: formal and informal. These terms are used to divide the education inside the schools from the outside one. Formal education can be defined as a regulated education taught compulsorily at schools. Informal education is understood as the action of educating but unintentionally and not in a didactic way. Informal learning takes place outside schools and colleges, the purpose of which is not learning, that is why this learning is an inescapable part of daily life.
