The role of grammar when learning English as a second language has an important purpose in the learning process as a whole. Grammar is a system of rules and principles for speaking and writing a language. It’s that part of the study of a language which deals with the forms and structure of words and with their usual classification in phrases and sentences. Some people who are learning English as a second language make one simple, but tremendous mistake; they forget to learn English grammar. Not studying English grammar stops students from thinking more logically when deciding which words, clauses and sentences to use. It deprives them from being able to categorise their words and sentences into meaningful conversation and communication. It stops them from putting their messages across clearly and precisely, which makes it hard for them to be understood by other people, compromising the quality of their dialogues. Grammar is what makes it possible for learners to communicate and understand what they see and what they say. Grammar is vitally important as it is the backbone of a language. It provides students with the structure they need in order to organise and deliver their ideas and messages more accurately. English grammar allows students to be better communicators, readers and writers, as it teaches them how to build sentences, the types of words that they use and when to use them. In short, it makes them think more logically and facilitates communication as a whole. Once students are familiar with the grammar rules of their target language, they are able to think more logically, making better decisions on their choices of words, clauses and sentences. Grammar rules help learners to make their communication to appear coherent. The acquisition of English grammar also helps learners to improve their writing and reading skills. Writing demands a lot of mental effort, and understanding the use of nouns, verbs, adverbs, adjectives, phrases or clauses helps them to write English better, and knowing basic grammar is an essential mechanism to understand what it’s being read. Learning grammar in the classroom is also important to promote interaction between students. As we all know, sometimes students do not have sufficient ability, vocabulary or even personal experiences to talk about topics that are suggested by the teacher or the course book. However, yet not being the most exciting topic, and not one that will bring thoughtful or long interesting discussions ,debating grammar provides a common topic for students to talk about. Having students discussing grammar as in identifying parts of a speech, for instance, will give them an opportunity to express their ideas and opinions, promoting interaction even in lower level classes, where this can be a real challenge. Grammar, therefore, is the foundation for communication. It helps improve the skills students need to become fully fluent. When students have learned grammar, it will be easier for them to know how to organise and express their ideas without impediment. As a result, they will be able to speak, read and write the language more fluently.
