In the very beginning, I would like to state why I have chosen exactly this topic. I have often experienced the need to operate English language even in the boundaries of my not so attractive for foreigners country, even apart from the times I had to operate it during my compulsory English studies at school, college, university or courses. Being as an interpreter for a buyer, translating information given in manuals, explaining a tourist how to get to a certain location – all this is just a little thing, but of course it took place in the boundaries of the small country, which does not often have many English speaking visitors or products, which manuals have no translation to the local language. But what if you go abroad? Whatever country you go to, the alternative language to the local one, which migration control officers will use, is English. What if you don’t necessarily go abroad, but you wish to establish a business partnership with an Australian company to import some goods from Australia to your country? The answer for the question what language of communication shall be is obvious. Especially in the 21-st century, English language has a great influence almost all over the world. In my composition, I would like to describe the status of English language in the whole modern world and therefore state my own opinion on that matter. Historically English language has been gaining its popularity especially throughout the times of colonization policy of England. By 1922, the population of the British Empire was 480000 people, which was 24% of the world population! Therefore, the official language on its territories was English. Even though there is only the UK left after the fall of the British empire, English language is still one of the most popular along with Chinese and Spanish, because it is used as the official one in such countries as the USA, Canada, Australia, South Africa, New Zealand etc. In almost all the countries the compulsory foreign language taught at schools and other educational institutions is English. Especially in the western world we often deal with Anglo-Saxon culture, such as Hollywood movies, British tv series or songs using English language. Let's even have a look at some of the countries of Far East, like Korea. If you listen to different Korean pop songs, you can notice that it is common to use different English words in their lyrics. English is the official language of many international organizations, such as the United Nations, World Trade Organization, International Labour Organization and many others. Also, it can be observed, that English is the language of business communication of private entities, entrepreneurs, and governmental bodies at international scenes, when both parties have different native languages and one party has no proficiency in the language of the other one. Even though, there are more bearers of Chinese language native speakers, than English ones, English is still preferred to be chosen for learning as the second language by the most of the world population of non-native English speakers. Why? Even notwithstanding the cultural issues, English is considered to be easier for learning due to the alphabetical system of writing and absence of complex pronunciation tones. In conclusion, I would like to admit that despite the English language has the second position in the list of the most popular languages by the amount of its bearers, it is still considered as a global language, because due to many historical, political and especially modern cultural reasons. In my opinion, it is very important for any person to know at least two languages, one of which is their native language for speaking in the boundaries of their motherland and English at a minimum of intermediate level for global discoveries of new employment or business opportunities or just for travelling.
