Topic: English as a global Language. Title: Do you speak English? Nowdays, people are suddenly interested in improving their english and are looking for teacher or academies that will work miracles and help them learn as fast as possible and without any effort. This is why I chose this topic, and in this essay I will explain how important it is for us teachers to transmit to our students that English is a global language and the importance of learning and speaking in english for their lives ans thier professional future. First of all, I would like to explain where I live so my perspective is better understood. I live in a small island called Tenerife, it belongs to Spain but geograficly it is situated close to Africa. Tenerife belongs to the 7 Canary Island at the Atlantic Ocean with a surface of 2034.37 km² and the population is of 904 713. I haven´t lived here all my life altough I was born here, after living abroad many years I came back and I have been living here since 2002. I have learnt english since the age of 4 years old, I traveled to Argentina and had a lovely teacher, I will never forget her, her name is Dawn, she is American and she was a lovely, kind, fun and funny teacher. Nowdays, she is my role model, she spoke english with me all the time, at the age of 4 I only spoke a little Sapnish so I didn´t speak much at all. Her patience and constant repetitions helped me catch up with the rest of the native students, and after a few months I was already singing, counting and telling short stories to my parents when they arrived home. My parents have always spoken with me in Spanish so I would never forget my native language but they also made a extra effort so that my brothers and sisters and I would always have someone to speak to in english, my parents knew that English would be important for our lives and they always pressured us to keep learning and practicing. The main point of this essay is to mention how life is here and the cultural shock that I have found working as a teacher, most of the parents here in this Island aren´t aware of the importance the english language and the responsibility they have now that their children are young to push them into learning english and helping them understand that it´s almost as important as any other school subject. The advantages of this lack of interest and lack of hard work to learn english, is that I always find jobs as a teacher for all the different levels, and my english has a possitive impact because of my clean accent and fluency. There are many parents who understand the importance of this global language and pay well for private classes and don´t neglect the fact that their sons or daughters are having an education for their future. The disadvantages of not appretiating this global languange is that people laugh at you when you speak well, and think you are trying to show off, or that you are tryig to ridicule them. It has been hard for me to accept this cultural handicap, and have had many arguements with young and old trying to enlighten them and explaining them the importance of using the global language. Besides, this is a turistic island and we have English turists comimg over all year around and many Germans aswell. So, understanding and speaking english here in this island should be a requirement for all young and old.
