Previously, I didn't know that there were a total of 12 tenses in the English language. This surprises me. The four present tenses, as presented in this unit, are Present Simple, Present Perfect, Present Continuous, and Present Perfect Continuous. Usage will be the most difficult part to teach a foreign student, especially when their first language only requires the Present Simple tense for ongoing actions. Present Simple: Use: routine, factual statements, commentary, present stories, directions Present Perfect: Use: finished actions/unspecified time, finished actions/unfinished time, past action/presently true, past actions/present results Present Continuous: Use: actions in progress, temporary action/generally in progress, frequent/regular actions, situation description Present Perfect Continuous: Use: ongoing activities w/specified time, recently finished action w/ present result
