In my first year of teaching, I lost my temper with a particular class. They were in 6th grade at the time. At that moment, I 'lost' that class. Another teacher was brought in to teach them for the remainder of the year. I saw some of those students again in their third year of junior high school. Needless to say, they were not excited at all to see me. Since that year when I became visibly angry, I have been employing other means of controlling a classroom. This unit opened my thinking to 'building rapport' with the students. Oftentimes as adults, we like to talk and exert our ideas, but I agree with this unit that soliciting the opinions and ideas of the children is equally if not more so important. It gives them a stake in the lesson and thus they are more apt to participate and contribute.
