26/4/2019 What makes motivation in the classroom so Important? Motivation can be a tricky subject to approach for a teacher each student will have their own wants and needs for learning the English language so this must be addressed carefully. First the teacher might want to assess students and attempt to find their individual motivations via elicitation. Elicitation can be achieved by various methods such as a worksheet, informational games, or group warmers in which students would reveal their personal motivations to the teacher. Most beginner students will have varying response to the question of what motivates them to practice English language. Some may say they are working to improve upon themselves or prepare for a future job prospect. Other may have little choice of learning English all together such as young learners attending secondary language classes in school. Whatever the root cause of their motivation a teacher must be aware of the impact in can hold personally on each student and where the potential lies as an unmotivated student will likely not participate or wish to participate in activities. Once motivation has been established it then becomes much easier for one to establish a plan of approach to furthering their level of English but only if the teacher can keep motivation high. Teachers can keep motivation high in a classroom by making the classroom an enjoyable experience while still keeping the effectiveness of the lesson. Simple changes can be made in fact, walls can be decorated, lesson plans can be fun and kept to a reasonable length, but most importantly the teacher can come into class with enthusiasm. As with an enthusiastic teacher, many students would be willing to participate and eager to learn from the sight of a teacher happy, eager, and willing to be in attendance and ready to provide education. Motivated students and teachers are highly likely to effectively learn/teach the English language because they are anticipating class to be an enjoyable experience prompting results and progress toward their goals. In my youth this was driven into my mind because I had amazing teachers both English and secondary language teachers whom loved their jobs and loved students wanted to learn in their classrooms. If not for these special teachers I may not have achieved the goals I sat for myself and become the person I am today. A fact that to this very day fuels my desire to teach young minds and help them build a healthy experience of class and education, I feel that potentially one day I will be able to inspire someone as my teacher previous did for me. Motivation can work differently for every individual but most importantly it is something that should be held in high importance because without a healthy motivation very little can be achieved. And if we do not achieve our minor or major goals in life then we do not move forward. Finally a good teacher will find a way to motivate students and fuel their individual desires to succeed in any endeavor they desire.
