This unit is like a refresher to me, reminding me that there are many factors I need to consider before making a lesson plan for the students, such as age, culture and learning experience. I’ve been a student-teacher before in a primary school when I was in college. I can say that I’ve had fun but it was challenging because their attention span is short, the learning style of other students is different from the others that I need to adjust the way of my teaching, and I always need to have high energy to match theirs. My role as their student-teacher doesn’t stay as a Manager/Controller the whole day for I am also a motivator, model, facilitator and assessor inside the class (that’s just for a 1-hour class). Of course, it depends on the lesson and activity I gave to the students. This unit also made me realized that as a TEFL teacher, I will not only be handling young learners but adults as well, which is a very different level. They could be college students or already working who wants to acquire advance level of English language. Therefore, I need to know my student’s background in learning the English language, as well as their culture and weaknesses for me to be able to motivate and guide them accordingly.
